Three Mavericks Earn All-Summit League First Team
May 7, 2014 | Softball
Elsasser, the Mavs' senior ace, led all league pitchers with a 1.12 ERA in league play, and her 13 total runs allowed in league games were fewest among No. 1 pitchers. Elsasser was 27-7 overall with a 1.72 ERA, and her 27 victories ranked first in the league and tied for sixth nationally. Her opponents hit just .197 against her this year and just .198 over her four-year career, the second-best mark in school history. Elsasser earned College Sports Madness National Pitcher of the Week on April 29, and she won the Summit League Pitcher of the Week award three times in 2014, giving her 11 weekly awards for her career. The Hershey, Neb., native threw her first career no-hitter and closed the season with 40 consecutive shutout innings. Her 71 career victories ranked 24th among active Division I pitchers, and her 39 career shutouts ranked third among active DI pitchers. Elsasser notched a career ERA of 1.36 to rank fourth among DI pitchers. She was an All-Summit League Second Team pick and Academic All-League selection in 2013.
Lutmer, a senior first baseman, led the Summit League with 17 home runs this season, second-most in single-season UNO history. She became the Mavericks' all-time leader in homers (51), walks (121) and was second in career RBI (179). Lutmer hit .351 in her senior season to rank 10th in the league, and she led all hitters with a .746 slugging percentage while finishing second in on-base percentage (.508) and RBI (47). A second-team selection last season, Lutmer garnered College Sports Madness National Player of the Week on Feb. 25, one day after being named Summit League Player of the Week, her third career weekly honor. Lutmer ranked seventh among active DI players in career home runs at season's end.
Mathewson, a first-team outfielder last year as a sophomore, repeated her selection in her junior season with a team-high .366 batting average, 11 home runs, 45 runs scored and 31 RBI. From her leadoff spot, Mathewson was the Mavs' top overall hitter with a team-best 27 extra-base hits as well. Her 11 homers tied for second-most in the league behind Lutmer, and her 45 runs ranked third among all league players. Last week, Mathewson earned Capital One Academic All-District 7 honors. Her career .713 slugging percentage ranks 26th among active DI players. In addition to her first-team honor in 2013, Mathewson was an NFCA All-Midwest Region selection.
Western Illinois junior Sammy Marshall earned Player of the Year for the second straight season, while Fort Wayne pitcher Miranda Kramer took home Pitcher of the Year. South Dakota's Rachel Cue was named Freshman of the Year, and North Dakota State coach Darren Mueller won Coach of the Year.
