Three Incoming Mavericks Taken in NHL Draft

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Three future members of the Omaha hockey team were selected in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft on Saturday.
Defenseman Luc Snuggerud was taken in the fifth round, 141st overall, by the Chicago Blackhawks. Snuggerud won the 2014 Reed Larson Award as the top high school defenseman in Minnesota after scoring nine goals and 39 assists for 48 points in 31 games for Eden Prairie high school He helped the Eagles to their first state tournament since 2011, was a team captain and as a senior was all-conference, all-metro and all-state. He also played in seven games with Muskegon and Omaha in the USHL, scoring a goal and four assists for five points and six penalty minutes and also had an assist in four playoff games for Omaha.
Forward Tyler Vesel was taken in the sixth round, 153rd overall, by the Edmonton Oilers. Vesel was a member of the All-USHL Second Team after finishing second for the Omaha Lancers and third in the USHL in scoring with 33 goals and 38 assists for 71 points in just 49 games. Prior to playing for the Lancers, Vesel played for Shattuck St. Mary's where he put up 61 goals and 90 assists for 151 points in 112 career games and won a national championship as a junior.
Forward Steven Spinner also was selected in the sixth round, 159th overall, by the Washington Capitals. Spinner, who will join the Mavericks in 2015-16, led Eden Prairie high school in scoring last season with 23 goals and 27 assists for 50 points in 31 games. He also combined to play 11 games in the USHL with Muskegon and Omaha, totaling two goals and three assists for five points.
In all, 62 players with NCAA connections were selected in this year's draft.
The Mavericks now have eight players on their roster who have been drafted by NHL teams. Incoming freshmen Avery Peterson (Minnesota 2013) and David Pope (Detroit 2013); and sophomore Jake Guentzel (Pittsburgh 2013) were all taken in last year's draft. Junior Brian Cooper was chosen by Anaheim in 2012; junior Nick Seeler was picked by Minnesota in 2011; and junior Tanner Lane was taken by Winnipeg, formerly Atlanta, in 2010.
