The Teams
The Mavericks are 14-5-3 overall this season and 8-3-1-1 in the NCHC this season, putting them in first place. They are coming off 5-4 and 1-0 wins over visiting Denver last weekend. UNO leads the all-time series with Colorado College, 7-4-2 but is 2-3-1 all-time against the Tigers in Colorado Springs. The Mavericks are 6-2-2 on the road this season and have not played on the road since visiting Miami on Dec. 5-6.
The Tigers are 4-13-1 overall and 0-8-1-0 in the NCHC this season, good for eighth place. CC hasn't played since an eastern swing during which it dropped a pair of games at Providence before beating Connecticut, 4-1, on Jan. 6. Colorado College is 3-2-0 at home this season and has played just two NCHC home games.
Last Time Out
The Mavericks earned their third NCHC series sweep and fourth sweep overall with 5-4 and 1-0 wins over Denver last weekend. On Friday, the Mavericks spotted DU a 3-0 lead before getting goals from Avery Peterson, Jake Guentzel and Jono Davis in a span of 3:44 to tie the game after two. In the third, the Pioneers retook the lead halfway through on a goal by Matt Tabrum, but David Pope notched the equalizer at 16:48 and Dominic Zombo delivered the game winner on the power play just 59 seconds later. Brock Crossthwaite, in relief of Kirk Thompson, made five saves in just less than 10 minutes of work to earn the win.
On Saturday, UNO struck early as Guentzel and Zombo combined to setup Austin Ortega for a goal at 3:29 of the first period. From there, Thompson took over. He made a career best 39 saves including 30 in the final two periods for his first career shutout.
