Peterson Grabs Second Straight Rookie Honor

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Omaha freshman Avery Peterson was named the Bauer NCHC Rookie of the Week for the second straight week and for the third time this season on Monday.
Peterson led the Mavericks in scoring last weekend during a split at Colorado College. In the first game of the series, he scored a powerplay goal on three shots as the Mavericks' comeback bid fell just short in a 4-3 loss to the Tigers. The next night, he scored two goals, including the game winner, and added an assist as the Mavericks bounced back for a 4-1 win. The native of Grand Rapids, Minn. finished the weekend with seven shots on goal and a +1 rating.
Peterson has scored points in four of the last five games (4-4-8) and now ranks fourth in team scoring with nine goals and nine assists for 18 points. He is also second on the team in goals. After the four-point weekend at Colorado College, he ranks third in scoring among all NCHC freshmen.
Peterson also was named the NCHC Rookie of the Week following the Mavericks' sweep of Ohio State in early November and after their sweep of Denver on Jan. 9-10.
Polls: Steady As She Goes
The Mavericks remained relatively stable in both weekly college hockey polls. They are still eighth in the latest top 20 poll put out by USCHO.com, their second straight week at that spot. They dropped one spot to eighth in the newest top 15 poll from USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine.
The Mavericks have been ranked for 10 straight weeks in the USCHO.com poll and for nine consecutive weeks in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll. Again this week, they are one of five NCHC teams ranked in both polls joining North Dakota (2), Minnesota Duluth (7), Miami (9) and Denver (11).
Omaha is off this weekend before returning to action with a home series against North Dakota on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 30-31.
