Mavericks Take Fifth at Summit XC Championship

BROOKINGS, S.D. – The Omaha cross country team came in fifth at the Summit League Championship on Saturday.
Karo Garcia led the Mavericks for the fifth time in six races this season, running a time of 23:25.90 to finish 27th overall over the 6K course at the Edgebrook Golf Course.
The Mavericks finished with 155 points for the championship. South Dakota won the event with 38 points, just ahead of South Dakota State at 46 points. North Dakota State was third at 51 and IUPUI took fourth at 85. Following the Mavericks, IPFW (159) was sixth, Western Illinois (219) finished seventh and Oral Roberts (228) was eighth.
Perla Gutierrez was second for the Mavericks and 30th in the 62-person race with a time of 23:43.19, just ahead of teammate Rosie Gensichen who was 32nd in a time of 23:46.33.
Alyssa Averhoff was fourth for the Mavericks and 37th overall at 24:00.90, and Avery Schmidt completed the scoring in 40th place with a time of 24:09.07.
Also running for the Mavericks were Shae Spady (52nd/25:31.89), Alyssa Thavenet (53rd/25:38.12) and Lauren Houston (56th/26:16.05).
The Mavericks return to action at the NCAA Regionals in Lawrence, Kan. on Friday, Nov. 13. It will be their first appearance in NCAA competition as a Division I school.
