This Week
The No. 6 Omaha Mavericks return home to host a non-conference series with Ohio State of the Big Ten Hockey Conference on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 27-28. Both games start at 7:07 p.m. from Baxter Arena.
The Teams
The Mavericks are 9-2-1 overall and 3-2-1-0/0 in the NCHC following a win and a tie at Miami last weekend. They are in a tie with Denver for third place in the conference standings. Omaha is 15-13-5 all-time against Ohio State, including a 9-3-3 mark against OSU in Omaha. Last year, the Mavericks swept a two-game series from the Buckeyes in Columbus, Ohio, winning 4-1 and 4-3. The Mavericks are 4-0-0 at home this year.
Ohio State is 3-7-0 overall and has yet to play a game against a Big Ten team. The Buckeyes are coming off a bye week. They last played on Nov. 13-14, sweeping a pair of games from visiting Canisius. After losing their first seven games of the season, the Buckeyes have won three straight. They are 0-4-0 on the road.
Last Time Out
The Mavericks came away with four of six points in last weekend's series at Miami. On Friday, the two teams skated to a 3-3 tie before the RedHawks scored in the 3-on-3 overtime to snag another standings point. Fredrik Olofsson broke a scoreless tie in the first minute of the second, scoring his fifth goal of the year, but Miami responded at 3:22 off the stick of Anthony Louis. Tyler Vesel tallied shorthanded at 5:28, but Miami continued the see-saw battle with a goal just 27 seconds later and took its first lead at 17:25 when Jack Roslovic scored. Austin Ortega forced OT with a goal at 9:50 of the third, but Louie Belpedio scored 49 seconds into the second OT to end the game. Kirk Thompson made 21 saves for the Mavericks.
On Saturday, UNO got out to a 2-0 lead on a first-period tally by David Pope and a second period powerplay marker by Brian Cooper, but Miami stormed back with two goals late in the second. After a scoreless third, the Mavericks won it at 3:14 of overtime when Jake Randolph knocked in a pass from Vesel. Evan Weninger made 30 saves for his sixth win of the year.
The Coaches
Dean Blais is in his seventh year as the head coach of the Mavericks, having led UNO to three 20-win campaigns in that time. The 1973 graduate of Minnesota has posted a record of 382-216-58 (.627) in his career as a head coach and has guided the Mavericks to a mark of 120-101-25 (.539).
Blais is a two-time Spencer Penrose Memorial Award winner as the Division I coach of the year and a four-time winner of the WCHA's Coach of the Year Award. He spent 10 years as head coach at North Dakota where he led UND to national championships in 1997 and 2000. He is assisted by coaches Troy Jutting and Alex Todd who both have extensive head coaching experience, Jutting at Minnesota State and Todd at Castleton (Vt.) State.
Steve Rohlik is in his third season as head coach at Ohio State. The 1990 graduate of Wisconsin and one-time Omaha assistant under former head coach Mike Kemp is 35-40-8 all-time in Columbus. He is assisted by Mark Strobel, another former UNO assistant, and Joe Exter.
