Guentzel, Weninger Named NCHC Players of Week

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Omaha junior forward Jake Guentzel and freshman goaltender Evan Weninger were named two of the four NCHC Players of the Week on Monday.
Guentzel earned Offensive Player of the Week for leading the Mavericks in scoring last weekend in a sweep of Minnesota Duluth. On Friday, Guentzel had the primary assist on Brian Cooper's goal just 24 seconds into the game, and he added another assist on UNO's second goal in a 4-2 win over the Bulldogs. He was +2 in the game. The next night, he had the primary assist on Justin Parizek's shorthanded goal late in the first period, scored an even-strength goal in the second and had a shorthanded empty-netter in the third as the Mavericks won again, 4-2. He finished the game +3.
Guentzel is tied for the NCAA scoring lead with 16 points and also is tied for the national lead in plus/minus (+12). He ranks second in the country with 10 assists. All three totals also lead the NCHC. He now has scored points in eight straight games (5-10-15) and has failed to score in just one of the first 10 games this season.
This is Guentzel's third weekly honor in his career but first since his freshman season.
Weninger was named Rookie of the Week for the second time this season. He improved to 5-1-0 this season by backstopping both wins against Minnesota Duluth last weekend. On Friday, he made 45 saves, tying him for sixth all-time for saves in a game at UNO, in a 4-2 win over the Bulldogs. The only goals he surrendered came on the power play. The next night, he made 35 more saves and allowed two goals in another 4-2 win.
In the first back-to-back starts in his college career, Weninger finished with a 2.00 goals-against average and a .952 save percentage. He is third in the NCHC in GAA (1.69) and leads in save percentage (.954). He is ninth and fifth nationally in those two categories respectively.
The Mavericks are off until Nov. 20-21 when they visit Miami.
