Mavericks Open Indoor Season at Kansas State

OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha track & field team begins its indoor season on Saturday, Dec. 12 at the K-State Winter Invitational in Manhattan, Kan. Action begins at 11 a.m. at Ahearn Field House.
The Mavericks are a young team this season, featuring just three seniors – Karo Garcia, Perla Gutierrez and Avery Schmidt – who are all distance runners.
Omaha should be particularly strong in the jumps led by sophomore Stephanie Ahrens and junior Taryn Derickson. Both were Summit All-League selections during last year's indoor championship after finishing 2-3 in the high jump. Ahrens is also a threat to score in the 60 meter hurdles where she's joined by classmate Maddie Buller who runs both the 60- and 300-meter races.
Sophomore Noni Henderson is UNO's leading returner in the long jump and the triple jump, posting the Mavericks' second-best marks in both events last season.
Junior Amanda Conlin had UNO's top mark in the shot put last season while classmate Megan Adams led the way in the weight throw.
This season, the Mavericks feature nine freshmen including distance runners Lauren Houston, Mads Nelson, and Shae Spady who all competed during the cross country season.
The Mavericks were picked to finish fifth in the annual Summit League preseason coaches' poll. They are eligible for NCAA competition for the first time as a Division I program this season following their four-year reclassification.
After the season opener, the Mavericks won't compete again until Saturday, Jan. 9 when they return to Kansas State for the Wildcat Invitational. The Summit League Indoor Championship is Feb. 26-27 at Fort Wayne, Ind.
