COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Omaha hockey team has had 13 of its players named NCHC Academic All-Conference, it was announced on Tuesday.
In all, 97 NCHC players received the honor, and eight of those players, one from each team, were named to the 2014-15 NCHC Scholar-Athlete Team. Ryan Massa is the Mavericks' representative. Members of the team have at least a 3.50 grade-point average and have competed in at least half of their team's games. They also have to demonstrate achievement on the ice and in community service.
The NCHC will select one student-athlete from the Scholar-Athlete Team as the NCHC Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
In addition to Massa, the Mavericks named NCHC Academic All-Conference include Ian Brady, Brian Cooper, Jake Guentzel, Tanner Lane, Brian O'Rourke, Austin Ortega, Justin Parizek, Aaron Pearce, James Polk, Kirk Thompson, Matt Youso and Dominic Zombo. Freshmen are not included in the list but those that finish with a 3.0 GPA or better at the end of the academic year will be recognized this summer and added to the team.
The academic awards mark the beginning of the award season for the NCHC. On Wednesday, the NCHC will announce its all-conference and all-rookie teams. That will be followed on Thursday by the announcement of the top three finalists for the specialty awards, the winners of which will be announced prior to the Frozen Face-Off on March 19 in Minneapolis, Minn.
