The No. 7/8 Omaha Mavericks finish the regular season when they host Colorado College on Friday and Saturday, March 6-7. Friday's game begins at 7:37 p.m., and Saturday's game starts at 7:07 p.m. from CenturyLink Center Omaha. On Friday, the Mavericks will recognize their five seniors - Ryan Massa, Kyle Mountain, Brian O'Rourke, James Polk and Dominic Zombo.
The Teams
The Mavericks are 17-10-5 overall this season and 11-8-3-3 in the NCHC, putting them in third place. The Mavericks are coming off a pair of 1-1 ties and subsequent shootout wins at Minnesota Duluth last weekend. The Mavericks lead the all-time series with Colorado College, 8-5-2, and are 5-1-0 all-time vs. CC at home. Omaha is 10-5-1 at home this season.
Colorado College is 6-23-2 overall and 2-18-2-0 in the NCHC this season, good for eighth place. The Tigers earned a 2-2 tie at home against Western Michigan last Friday, eventually losing 1-0 in a shootout. The next night, they shut out the Broncos, 5-0. CC is 1-14-1 on the road this season.
Last Time Out
The Mavericks played back-to-back 1-1 ties at Minnesota Duluth last weekend and then came away with the extra standings point each night with shootout victories. On Friday, UMD broke a scoreless tie early in the third period with a goal from Carson Soucy at 1:32, but James Polk finished off a pass from Jake Guentzel just 1:21 later to tie the game. In the shootout, Jake Randolph and Austin Ortega scored, and Ryan Massa stopped both UMD shooters. Massa stopped 25 in the game.
On Saturday, the Bulldogs again scored first, getting a goal from Justin Crandall at 18:03 of the second period. Brian O'Rourke picked up his first goal of the season at 6:50 of the third to tie the game. Randolph and Ortega again tallied in the shootout while Massa stopped two of three UMD shooters. Massa finished the game with 27 saves.
The Coaches
Dean Blais is in his sixth year as the head coach of the Mavericks, having led UNO to two 20-win campaigns in that time. The 1973 graduate of Minnesota has posted a record of 370-211-56 (.625) in his career as a head coach and has guided the Mavericks to a mark of 108-96-23 (.526). He coached in his 200th game at UNO on Oct. 31 at Cornell.
Blais is a two-time Spencer Penrose Memorial Award winner as the Division I coach of the year and a four-time winner of the WCHA's Coach of the Year Award. He spent 10 years as head coach at North Dakota where he led UND to national championships in 1997 and 2000. He is assisted by coaches Troy Jutting and Alex Todd who both have extensive head coaching experience, Jutting at Minnesota State and Todd at Castleton (Vt.) State.
Mike Haviland is in his first year as head coach at Colorado College. The long-time pro coach and 1990 graduate of Elmira is 6-23-2 this season at CC. He is assisted by Gene Reilly and R.J. Enga.
