Mavericks Return To Action Next Week

This Week
The Omaha men's and women's golf teams return to action next week. The men will be at the Sacramento State Invitational on Monday and Tuesday, March 9-10. The women's golf team will take part in the SUU Thunderbird Golf Invitational at Southern Utah on Thursday and Friday, March 12-13.
The Coaches
Tim Nelson is in his 12th season coaching the women's golf team at UNO. Nelson has led the Mavericks to four conference championships including three straight Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association titles before the Mavericks began their reclassification to Division I in 2011. The 1980 UNO grad also has guided the women's team to three NCAA regional titles and three appearances in the NCAA Championship. Seth Porter is in his fourth year at UNO and was elevated to the head coach of the men's team prior to this season. The 2002 graduate of Nebraska was a four-year letter winner there and a former professional player on the Gateway and Canadian Tours.
Spring Opener- Men Finish Sixth at Nicholls State
The Omaha men's golf team hasn't played since a sixth-place finish at the Atchafalaya Intercollegiate hosted by Nicholls State on Feb. 24. The Mavericks finished with a 54-hole team score of 950.
Karl Krieser led the Mavericks with a three-round score of 231. He finished in a three-way tie for eighth in the field of 45 golfers. It marked the fourth time in five team tournaments that he has led the Mavs in scoring.
Phillip Baumberger and Brandon Sletmoen tied for second for the Mavs and finished in a tie for 26th with scores of 241. Taylor Sidzyik was fourth for UNO with a score of 243 that put him in a tie for 32nd overall. Alex Holtan completed the scoring for UNO with a score of 246 that put him 38th overall.
Peters Sets Record For Women at Northern Arizona
Sophie Peters set a school record for lowest 36-hole tournament score at the Red Rocks Invitational, helping the Omaha women's golf team to a 16th-place finish on Feb. 28. Peters fired two straight rounds of 72 to finish at 144, tying her with Charlotte Jaengkit of Grand Canyon for the overall lead in the huge field of 129 golfers. Peters then won a one-hole playoff with a birdie on a par-five to earn individual medalist honors.
Peters' score was two strokes better than the previous school record set by Sara Wolfe in 2008 and later equaled by Erin Ommen the following season and by Dani Suponchick in 2009.
The Mavericks shot a season-low team round of 306 in round two to finish at 624 for the tournament. Host Northern Arizona won with a score of 597.
Katie Kesti was second for the Mavericks and finished in a tie for 59th with a score of 157. Megan Vetrovsky was one stroke back at 158, good for a tie for 67th. Makenna Kroeker shot 165, good for a tie for 99th, and Alexa Ruwe finished with a two-day total of 179.
Rankings
Krieser is in a tie for 17th in the Summit League for scoring average at 74.8 through 15 rounds this season. He is the only Maverick ranked in the top 20. Denver's Petter Mikalsen leads the league with an average of 70.7 in 19 rounds.
As a team, the Maverick men rank sixth out of nine schools with a team 18-hole stroke average of 304.4.
On the women's side, Sophie Peters is 20th in the league with a stroke average of 78.5 in 18 rounds. Denver's Mariell Bruun leads the Summit League with a stroke average of 71.1 in 14 rounds
As a team, the Mavs are eighth in the Summit with an 18-hole average of 323.6 in 16 rounds.

The men's team will be at the Wallace Jones/Warhawk Intercollegiate at Louisiana Monroe on Monday and Tuesday, March 23-24. The women resume play at the Morehead State Invitational on March 22-23 in Ocala, Fla.
