Messner Named NCHC Defenseman of Week

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Omaha freshman defenseman Joel Messner was named the Bauer NCHC Defenseman of the Week on Monday. It's his first weekly award and the 10th earned by a Maverick this season.
Messner tied for the team scoring lead against Colorado College last weekend with three points, all assists, in a tie and a win. On Friday, he set up Justin Parizek's shorthanded goal as the Mavericks tied the Tigers, 2-2. Messner was even for the game.
On Saturday, he had the first multiple-point game of his career, notching two assists in the Mavericks' 4-2 win. He was +3 for the game. Messner helped the Mavericks finish 5-for-6 (.833) on the penalty kill against CC's power play which came into the series ranked 11th in the nation.
Polls: No Change Heading Into Playoffs
The Mavericks did not move in either weekly college hockey poll released on Monday. They remain seventh in the top-15 poll put out by USA Today/USA Hockey, and they are still eighth in the top-20 poll released by USCHO.com.
The Mavericks have spent 15 weeks in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll and 16 weeks in the USCHO.com poll.
They have plenty of company from their NCHC neighbors. North Dakota remains number one in both polls after clinching the Penrose Cup last weekend as NCHC regular season champions. Miami (5/5), Minnesota Duluth (6/6) and Denver (8/7) are also ranked in the top 10 in both polls.
The Mavericks open the quarterfinals of the NCHC Playoffs this weekend when they host St. Cloud State on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, if necessary, March 13-15. Tickets for all three games are on sale at the CenturyLink Center box office, the Sapp Fieldhouse box office and through Ticketmaster.
