Shires Adds LSU Standout Pietro to Coaching Staff

OMAHA, Neb. – Former LSU standout Elena Pietro has joined the Omaha volleyball staff as an assistant coach, head coach Rose Shires announced Monday.
Pietro joins the Maverick staff after spending two years as the head volleyball coach at Papillion-LaVista South High School. She has also coached club volleyball locally for Premier Volleyball Club, as well as for the Cajunland Volleyball Club in New Orleans, La., and the Red Storm and Baton Rouge Volleyball Clubs in Baton Rouge, La.
“Elena will be an excellent addition to our staff,” Shires said. “Her energy and enthusiasm are very motivational. Elena has an extensive high-level competitive background and will bring a new level to our back court play. She will be a tenacious recruiter, having many contacts and a well-respected name across the country. Elena's competitiveness as a player was outstanding, but her competitiveness as a coach is exemplary. We are very proud to have Elena be part of our surging volleyball program.”
A four-year letterwinner at LSU as a libero and defensive specialist, Pietro was a two-time AVCA All-America Honorable Mention pick in 2007 and 2008. She twice earned AVCA All-South Region recognition, was voted SEC Defensive Player of the Year as a junior and senior and was an All-SEC Second Team selection both seasons. Over her Tiger career, Pietro broke LSU and SEC records for digs in a season (703) and digs per game in a season (5.33), and she led the conference and ranked 35th nationally in digs per game. Additionally, Pietro was a member of the USA Women's National A2 Team in 2008.
Following her decorated collegiate career, Pietro went on to play professionally for the Llaneras Professional Volleyball Team in Toa Baja, Puerto Rico. In 2010, she and her squad placed second in the Liga de Veleibol Superior Femenino.
A native of New Orleans, Pietro graduated with her bachelor's degree in elementary grades education from LSU in 2009.
“I'm beyond excited to join the volleyball staff at Omaha,” Pietro said. “UNO impressed me with its core goals to help student-athletes reach their academic and athletic potential while preparing them for life after college. Coaching at the Division I level has always been a personal ambition of mine, and I believe this school is a great fit for me. I have respect for both Coach Shires and Coach (Karen) Povondra and all they've accomplished with this program, and I look forward to helping continue the winning tradition here.”
