FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- A five-run third inning by Fort Wayne doomed the Omaha baseball team on Sunday, as the Mavericks fell 5-2 at Mastodon Field. UNO is now 16-16 (9-6 Summit League) on the season, while IPFW improves to 16-15 (6-9 Summit League).
Evan Miller (3-2) recorded the win on the mound for IPFW, allowing one unearned run on two hits and three walks while striking out nine in 6.0 innings pitched. The loss went to senior right-hander Tyler Hamer (1-2), who gave up five runs on two hits and three walks with five strikeouts in 2.2 innings of work.
At the plate, Omaha was led by junior Alex Schultz, who finished 2-for-4 with a run scored.
The Mavericks took the first lead of the game in the top of the third inning. With two outs, Schultz reached on a wild pitch and went to second when junior Cole Gruber reached on a fielding error. Junior Clayton Taylor then singled in Schultz, spotting Omaha a 1-0 lead.
Fort Wayne retaliated with five runs on three hits in the bottom half of the inning. Shannon Baker and Jackson Boyce both drew walks and Zak Kellogg was hit by a pitch to open the inning with the bases loaded. A two-run single to left by Evan VanSumeren scored Kellogg and Baker, and two batters later, Shane Trevino sent a two-run double to left that plated Boyce and VanSumeren. Greg Kaiser drove in the Mastodons' last run of the inning with an RBI single to left that scored Trevino, giving IPFW a 5-1 advantage.
UNO was held to two hits until the eighth, when it posted one run on three hits. Redshirt freshman Isaac Holt had a leadoff double to left, followed by a Schultz single to center to put runners on the corners. Gruber's sacrifice fly to left plated Holt, and Omaha trailed 5-2. Fort Wayne made quick work of the ninth inning though, halting the Mavericks in order with two strikeouts and a groundout for a 5-2 final.
Omaha returns to action on Wednesday, April 15, traveling to in-state rival Nebraska. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. at Haymarket Park in Lincoln, Neb., and links to live stats, audio and video will be available on OMavs.com.
