Blais Named Finalist For Penrose Award

OMAHA, Neb. – Omaha head coach Dean Blais is a finalist for the Spencer Penrose Award, given each year to the top head coach in men's Division I hockey.
Blais is a past winner of the award, having been honored in 1997 and 2001 when he was the head coach of North Dakota.
The nominees include any coach who won or shared coach of the year honors in his own conference this season and those coaches who have advanced to the NCAA semifinals. Voting will be conducted prior to the start of the Frozen Four in Boston.
The other finalists include members of Blais' own coaching tree: Minnesota State head coach and former UNO assistant Mike Hastings and North Dakota head coach Dave Hakstol who was the NCHC Coach of the Year this season and was an assistant to Blais when he was at UND.
The other finalists are Greg Carvel of St. Lawrence, Guy Gadowsky of Penn State, Nate Leaman of Providence, David Quinn of Boston University and Derek Schooley of Robert Morris.
The award will be presented at the American Hockey Coaches Association Coach of the Year banquet in Naples, Fla. on May 2.
Blais will make his fourth appearance as a head coach in the Frozen Four next Thursday, April 9 when he leads the Mavericks against Providence in the first semifinal game at 4 p.m. CT at TD Garden in Boston.
