Mavericks At Dakota Relays This Week

This Week
The Omaha track & field team heads north this week to compete in the 90th running of the Howard Wood Dakota Relays on Friday and Saturday, May 1 and 2. The action begins on Friday at 10:30 a.m. and Saturday at 9 a.m. from Howard Wood Stadium in Sioux Falls, S.D.
The Coaches
Chris Richardson is in his ninth season with the Omaha track & field program, his second as its head coach after seven seasons as an assistant. Richardson helped guide the Mavericks through some of their most successful years including three conference championships and three top-five NCAA finishes. The highlight of that stretch included a fourth-place finish at the 2010 indoor championship prior to the Mavericks' reclassification to Division I. In 2011, he was named the USTFCCCA South Central Regional Assistant Coach of the Year.
Richardson is assisted by Marc Bierbaum and Ryan Finley. Bierbaum is in his fifth season coaching the distance events in addition to coaching the cross country team. Finley is in his second season, coaching both sprints and jumps. Cliff Cisar and former UNO standout and multiple record holder Sami Spenner are volunteer assistant coaches.
The Previous Meet
The Omaha track & field team put up more personal bests on the second day of competition at the Kip Janvrin Open at Simpson College on April 23-24.
In the 1,500 meters, Katarina Zarudnaya won with a time of 4:37.93. She was one of three Mavericks in the top eight in the event. Kayla Sabotin was fourth in a time of 4:50.44 and Rosie Gensichen was fifth at 4:51.13. The latter two times were personal bests.
The Mavericks had three personal bests in the 5,000 meters. Karo Garcia put up a time of 18:25.33, almost a minute faster than her previous best, to come in 13th place. Perla Gutierrez was right behind at 18:25.96. Gensichen finished 19th with a time of 18:37.10, almost 52 seconds better than her previous best.
The Mavericks ran a season-best in the 4 x 400 meter relay. The team of Hannah Fowler, Armstrong, Alexis Allgood and Zarudnaya finished third with a time of 4:02.33.
In the throwing events, Megan Adams put up a personal best in the discus with throw of 126-00. She also took third in the javelin with a toss of 103-11. The discus was part of the schedule on Thursday.
Amanda Conlin was second in the shot put with a mark of 40-03 ¼.
In action from earlier in the week, Ashley Kildow ran a time of 17:25.06 at the Drake Relays on Thursday in Des Moines.
Ranking in the Summit League
The Mavericks rank among the top eight in the Summit League in several events. Terri Armstrong is sixth in the 100 meters (12.29).
Katarina Zarudnaya is fourth in the 1,500 meters (4:30.31) and ranks fifth in the 800 meters (2:12.08). Ashley Kildow ranks fourth in the 5,000 meters (17:00.19, school record) and is just outside the top eight in the 1,500. In the 10,000 meters, Kristen Rogers is seventh (38:38.66), and Karo Garcia is just outside in 10th (39:12.11).
Stephanie Ahrens is seventh in the 100 meter hurdles (15.14) and in the field is tied for second in the high jump (5-09 3/4). Emily Everitt is sixth (5-06) and Taryn Derickson is tied for seventh (5-05). In the long jump, Noni Henderson is tied for eighth (18-03 1/4).

The Mavericks will compete in the Nebraska Tune-Up on Saturday, May 9 beginning at noon at Ed Weir Stadium in Lincoln. It will be their last meet before competing in the Summit League Championship in Macomb, Ill. on May 13-15.
