Mavericks Compete at Summit Championships

This Week
The Omaha track & field team concludes the season, its last in a four-year reclassification to Division I, at the Summit League Outdoor Championships on Wednesday - Friday, May 13-15. Competition begins at 11 a.m. CT each day from Hanson Field on the campus of Western Illinois. Last season, the Mavericks finished fourth in the Summit outdoors.
The Coaches
Chris Richardson is in his ninth season with the Omaha track & field program, his second as its head coach after seven seasons as an assistant. Richardson helped guide the Mavericks through some of their most successful years including three conference championships and three top-five NCAA finishes. The highlight of that stretch included a fourth-place finish at the 2010 indoor championship prior to the Mavericks' reclassification to Division I. In 2011, he was named the USTFCCCA South Central Regional Assistant Coach of the Year.
Richardson is assisted by Marc Bierbaum and Ryan Finley. Bierbaum is in his fifth season coaching the distance events in addition to coaching the cross country team. Finley is in his second season, coaching both sprints and jumps. Cliff Cisar and former UNO standout and multiple record holder Sami Spenner are volunteer assistant coaches.
The Previous Meet
Personal bests highlighted a day of competition for the Omaha track & field team at the Nebraska Invitational on May 9, their final tune-up before the Summit Championships.
In the hurdles, Stephanie Ahrens had a personal best time of 14.87 at 100 meters. Maddie Buller also had a personal best running in the 400 meters hurdles, clocking a time of 1:05.01 to finish in fifth place. She finished one place ahead of teammate Madeline Glesinger who came in at 1:05.69.
Also on the track, Tschida Johnson had a new PR in the 100 meters with a time of 13.19, good for third place. Johnson also placed second in the 200 meters with a time of 27.55
In the 400 meters, Hannah Fowler was eight with a time of 58.63, just ahead of teammate Alyssa Thavenet who set a new personal best with a time of 59.31.
Katarina Zarudnaya was second in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:39.87 while Kayla Sabotin was sixth with a time of 5:02.51.
In the 3,000 meters, Ashley Kildow was second in a time of 10:07.08 while Rosie Gensichen took fifth with a personal best time of 10:44.88 PR. Alyssa Averhoff was seventh at 11:14.83 while Perla Gutierrez finished eighth in 11:23.80.
In the field, Emily Everitt was fifth in the high jump with a mark of 5-05, ahead of Taryn Derickson who posted a leap of 5-01.
Payton Horacek was eighth in the long jump with a mark of 17-10 ¼ while Nicole Liske was ninth at 17-06 ¼.
In the discus, Megan Adams finished third with a throw of 116-03, edging out teammate Lauren Doeschot who was fourth with a personal best mark of 114-07. Amanda Colin was fifth at 114-05.
Ranking in the Summit League
Heading into the championships, the Mavericks rank among the top eight in the Summit League in several events. In the sprints, Terri Armstrong is seventh in the 100 meters (12.29).
In the longer distances, Katarina Zarudnaya is fourth in the 1,500 meters (4:30.31) and ranks fifth in the 800 meters (2:12.08). Ashley Kildow ranks fourth in the 5,000 meters (17:00.19, school record) and is just outside the top eight in the 1,500 (4:33.54/10th). In the 10,000 meters, Kristen Rogers is seventh (38:38.66), and Karo Garcia is just outside in 10th (39:12.11).
