Walkoff Dooms Mavericks in Extra Innings at NDSU

FARGO, N.D. -- The Omaha baseball team concluded conference play on Saturday afternoon, falling 5-4 in a walkoff to North Dakota State in 12 innings at Newman Outdoor Field. The Mavericks are now 19-30 (12-18 Summit League), while the Bison improve to 20-29 (11-19 Summit League).
The win went to Trevor Jaunich (4-2), who held Omaha to one hit in the final 3.0 innings. Redshirt freshman right-hander Ryan Cate (0-1) took the loss, surrendering the game-winning run with four Bison hits and three walks. Sophomore right-hander Brett Sasse threw 5.0 innings in his start, limiting NDSU to just three hits and a walk with one strikeout.
Redshirt freshman Isaac Holt led the Mavericks with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate, scoring once. Freshman Adam Caniglia tallied his second straight game with three hits, finishing 3-for-5 and scoring once, and junior Alex Schultz added a 2-for-5 performance with an RBI.
Omaha opened the game by securing a swift 1-0 lead in the second inning. Caniglia led off with a double to left, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Cole Patterson and scored on sophomore Mark Handberg's RBI groundout.
The Mavericks tacked on another run in the sixth, putting two runners on with back-to-back one-out singles from Cate and Caniglia. Both moved into scoring position on a wild pitch, and Patterson then reached on a Bison error that allowed Cate to score and extended the lead to 2-0.
UNO added a third run in the seventh, sparked by Handberg's leadoff hit-by-pitch. He went to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior Collin Leif, then scored on Schultz's RBI single up the middle to make it 3-0.
North Dakota State, however, rallied in the seventh, plating three runs on two hits to erase Omaha's lead. Taylor Sanders was driven in with an RBI groundout by Paul Funk, followed by an immediate RBI single up the middle by Mason Pierzchalski to score John Skrbec. The Bison notched their final run of the inning on Danny Regan's sacrifice fly to center, which scored Pierzchalski for a 3-3 tie.
The Bison took their first lead of the day at 4-3 in the eighth, as Skrbec drew a two-out walk, stole second and crossed with the help of Pierzchalski's RBI single to right. Omaha responded just as quickly, tying the game in the next half-inning. Holt led off with a single and advanced on a Bison throwing error, then scored on Handberg's sacrifice bunt to make it 4-4.
Regan's one-out single helped NDSU threaten in the bottom of the ninth, but Omaha retired Brayden Resch with a flyout and caught Regan stealing to end send the game to extra innings. Finally, in the bottom of the 12th, Funk got aboard with a one-out infield single and Juan Gamez singled to left, giving NDSU runners on the corners. Andy Wicklund delivered the final blow, singling up the middle to drive in Funk for the 5-4 walkoff win.
Omaha returns to action next weekend, closing the 2015 season with a three-game non-conference series against Incarnate Word, May 21-23. First pitch all three days is set for 2 p.m. at the Ballpark at Boys Town, and links to live stats and audio will be available on OMavs.com.
