Four Mavericks Named to All-Summit Baseball Team

OMAHA, Neb. -- Four Omaha baseball players have been named to the 2015 All-Summit Baseball Team, the Summit League office announced Tuesday evening. The first team included junior outfielder Cole Gruber and junior infielder Clayton Taylor, while senior right-handed pitcher Zach Williamsen and junior utility player Alex Schultz were selected to the second team.
The Mavericks had three repeat all-conference picks in Taylor, Gruber and Schultz. Taylor earned second-team recognition in 2013 and first-team honors in 2014, while Gruber and Schultz were second-team honorees in 2014.
Taylor, who has started all 49 games this season, has batted .294 with seven doubles, two triples, a team-best six home runs, 37 runs scored and a team-high 36 RBI. The Mount Michael graduate ranks in the top five in the league for home runs (fourth - six), triples (fifth - two) and sacrifice flies (fifth - four). He owns 15 multi-hit games and a team-best nine multi-RBI games.
Gruber, the Summit League's leading hitter, has batted .389 this year with seven doubles, a triple, a home run, a team-high 40 runs scored, 18 RBI, 32 walks drawn and 21 stolen bases. He ranks 10th nationally in on-base percentage (.493), 16th in batting average (.389) and 37th in stolen bases per game (0.48). The Papillion-LaVista product has 16 multi-hit games this year, including four single-game performances with four hits. Gruber was named Summit League Player of the Week on March 16.
Schultz has started all 49 contests in 2015 and leads Omaha with 21 multi-hit games. He has compiled a .313 batting average, which ranks second on the team, along with a team-high 11 doubles, a triple, three homers, 39 runs scored, 23 RBI, 20 walks drawn and 11 stolen bases. Schultz, a native of Sioux Falls, S.D., sits in the top five in the conference for stolen bases (fourth - 11) and hits (fifth - 65).
Williamsen caps his Maverick career with his first All-Summit nod after making a team-high 15 mound appearances with 14 starts. Twice named Summit League Pitcher of the Week (Feb. 23 and May 11), he owns a record of 7-7 with a 4.20 ERA over 81.1 innings pitched. The Millard West product has struck out 60 hitters this year, which ranks second on the team. He threw a complete-game shutout with a career-high 10 strikeouts at Western Illinois on May 9 and was part of Omaha's combined no-hitter over Chicago State on Feb. 23.
Omaha closes the 2015 season this weekend, hosting Incarnate Word for a three-game non-conference series, May 21-23. First pitch all three days is set for 2 p.m. at the Ballpark at Boys Town, and Senior Day festivities will be held prior to Saturday's game to honor the Mavericks' six seniors.
