The No. 7 Omaha Mavericks are back home this week to host the Miami RedHawks in an NCHC series on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 22-23. Friday's game begins at 7:37 p.m. to accommodate television coverage on CBS Sports Network while Saturday's game starts at 7:07 p.m. from Baxter Arena.
The Teams
The Mavericks are 15-6-1 overall and 5-6-1-0/0 in the NCHC, putting them in fifth place in the conference standings. Omaha is coming off a 4-3 overtime win and 5-1 loss at North Dakota last weekend. The Mavericks trail the all-time series with Miami, 12-18-5, and they are 6-7-1 all-time against the RedHawks in Omaha. They earned a 3-3 tie and a 3-2 overtime win over Miami back in November at Oxford, Ohio. The Mavericks are 8-2-0 at home this season and 6-4-0 in the last 10 games.
Miami is 7-11-3 overall and 2-8-2-2/0 in the conference, putting it in seventh place. The RedHawks played just one game last week, beating Bowling Green at home, 2-1. Miami is 2-7-0 on the road this season and 2-6-2 in its last 10 games.
Last Time Out
The Mavericks picked up a split at North Dakota last weekend. On Friday, UND took a 1-0 lead early in the first before Jake Guentzel tied the game later in the period. Ian Brady gave UNO the lead at 1:56 of the second, and Jake Randolph would break a 2-2 tie with a goal at 19:59 of the middle period. The Fighting Hawks re-tied the game in the third, setting up overtime heroics for Austin Ortega who netted the game-winning goal at 2:29. Alex Blankenburg, in his first collegiate start, made 26 saves in the win.
On Saturday, Tyler Vesel scored on the power play at 17:55 of the first, but UND got its own powerplay goal less than two minutes later and then added two goals in each of the last two periods to pull away. Kirk Thompson took the loss with six saves and three goals against in just over 26 minutes of work.
The Coaches
Dean Blais is in his seventh year as the head coach of the Mavericks, having led UNO to three 20-win campaigns in that time. The 1973 graduate of Minnesota has posted a record of 388-220-58 (.626) in his career as a head coach and has guided the Mavericks to a mark of 126-105-25 (.541).
Blais is a two-time Spencer Penrose Memorial Award winner as the Division I coach of the year and a four-time winner of the WCHA's Coach of the Year Award. He spent 10 years as head coach at North Dakota where he led UND to national championships in 1997 and 2000. He is assisted by coaches Troy Jutting and Alex Todd who both have extensive head coaching experience, Jutting at Minnesota State and Todd at Castleton (Vt.) State.
Enrico Blasi is in his 17th season at Miami. The 1994 graduate of MU is 358-241-60 all time at his alma mater. He is assisted by Brent Brekke and Nick Petraglia.
