Ortega Named NCHC Offensive Player of the Week

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Junior forward Austin Ortega was named the NCHC Offensive Player of the Week on Monday, his second such award this season.
The conference's weekly awards cover action during the last three weeks. Ortega earned the nod on the basis of his work against Arizona State on Dec. 19-20. He tied for the team scoring lead in the series, scoring four goals and adding an assist for five points as the Mavericks swept the Sun Devils in the first ever meeting of the two schools.
Ortega had two goals, including his NCAA-leading sixth game winner, in a 3-1 win in the series opener. He also assisted on UNO's other goal.
The next night, he had two more goals as the Mavericks blanked ASU, 6-0. He finished the weekend +2.
Ortega is second in team scoring with 16 goals and seven assists for 23 points in 17 games. He leads the NCHC in goals and is just four from tying his career best for goals in a season.
Mavericks Steady at No. 6
In other news today, the Mavericks remained sixth in both major college hockey polls. They were sixth heading into the holiday break as both the USCHO.com poll and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine polls took a couple of weeks off.
The Mavericks are one of five NCHC teams in the USCHO.com top-20 poll. North Dakota tops the poll, followed by St. Cloud State (4), Omaha, Denver (17) and Minnesota Duluth (19). North Dakota is second and St. Cloud State is fifth along with the Mavericks in the USA Today top-15 poll.
The Mavericks are back at Baxter Arena to host No. 17 Denver on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 8-9.
