Northern Colorado Edges Mavericks, 95-89

GREELEY, Colo. – The Omaha swimming & diving team continued its Rocky Mountain road trip Monday evening at Northern Colorado, falling to the Bears 95-89.
For the second consecutive meet, freshman Andrea Brosnahan shined in the diving events. The newcomer from Wayzata, Minn., won both the 1-meter and 3-meter events, while etching her name in the Maverick record books in the process. In both the 1-meter (249.07) and 3-meter (258.30) dives, Brosnahan secured the second-best freshman scores in Omaha diving history in her respective events.
"This was a very good trip to Colorado over Fall Break for our team," head coach Todd Samland said. "We managed to cram in two meets, five swim practices and a session in the weight room. It was tough losing by six points at UNC tonight, but we're showing improvements already from last year. I'm very impressed with the fight in our team this season."
Senior Morgan Stepp won the 1000 free in a landslide with a time of 10:49.82 – a finish that saw her touch the wall more than 16 seconds before the second-place swimmer from Northern Colorado.
Sophomore Kirsten Kracke was victorious in the 50 free, finishing with a winning time of 25.88. Freshman Brook Landt finished third in the event at 26.04.
In the 100 free, junior Cassie Jahn and UNC's Karlie O'Connell swam the most exciting race of the night. Jahn and O'Connell were neck-and-neck the whole way, before O'Connell's final effort (55.07) beat Jahn to the wall by one tenth of a second. Jahn finished second at 55.08, while senior Mackenzie Ritter took the third spot with a time of 56.26.
Omaha returns to action for its home opener on Oct. 22 against Iowa State. The meet is slated to get underway at 1 p.m. from HPER Pool.
