Vermont Races Past Mavericks, 5-2

OMAHA, Neb. – Vermont scored five unanswered goals to earn a 5-2 win over the No. 20 Omaha hockey team on Saturday night at Baxter Arena.
The Mavericks dipped to 2-1-1 on the year, going 0-1-1 in the series with the Catamounts after a 4-4 tie on Friday. Vermont improved to 2-1-1.
As in the previous night, the Mavericks got out to a 2-0 lead. Just 1:35 into the first, Mason Morelli took a pass from Steven Spinner and fired a shot through traffic that slid under goalie Mike Santaguida.
Then at 4:00, they stretched their lead to 2-0 when Ian Brady fired a shot through traffic that slipped inside the far post for a powerplay goal and his first goal of the year.
Vermont changed goaltenders following Brady's goal, lifting Santaguida for freshman Stefanos Lekkas, Friday's starter. The move paid off as Lekkas stopped all 21 shots he faced to earn his first career win.
The Mavericks got into penalty trouble later in the period, and Vermont took advantage. Just as a penalty expired, Travis Blanleil snapped home the rebound of a shot by Jake Massie to draw the Catamounts to within 2-1 at intermission.
Vermont battled back in the second to take the lead. Brady Shaw rifled a shot that beat goaltender Kris Oldham over his right shoulder to tie the game at 6:18.
Then late in the period, Vermont worked a nifty passing play to free up Liam Coughlin for his first goal of the year at 17:18.
Craig Puffer got a powerplay goal at 1:13 of the third, and Tom Forgione added one more at the 14-minute mark to squelch any chance of a Maverick comeback.
Kris Oldham, in his first start at home, took the loss with 14 saves in two periods of work. Alex Blankenburg played the third, giving up two goals on 11 shots.
The Mavericks were 1-for-6 on the power play while Vermont went 1-for-8.
The Mavericks continue their six-game home stand on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 28-29, against UMass Lowell of Hockey East.
