Ortega, Weninger Named NCHC Players of the Week

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Two Omaha hockey players were named NCHC Players of the Week on Monday.
Senior Austin Ortega was named Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season while sophomore Evan Weninger was named Goaltender of the Week for the second consecutive week.
Ortega led Omaha in scoring during a weekend series at Wisconsin in which the Mavericks earned a tie and a win. On Friday, Ortega had an assist as the Mavericks and Badgers slugged out a 3-3 tie. The next night, the native of Escondido, Calif. notched his first career hat trick and had an assist in Omaha's 7-4 come-from-behind win. Ortega was +3 in the win and had three blocks. With the five-point weekend, he moved into a tie for first in scoring in the NCHC for all games played with 22 points and now ranks second in the NCHC with 12 goals. He also leads the NCHC with 11 power play points (4-7-11).
Weninger stopped a career-high 47 shots in Friday's tie. He was particularly strong down the stretch as the Mavericks were outshot 38-15 over the final two periods and overtime. He helped the Mavericks hold Wisconsin, ranked fourth in the NCAA on the power play at the time, 0-for-6 on the power play. It is the second straight impressive performance for the native of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan who had 31 saves in a 2-0 shutout at Northern Michigan in his last start on Nov. 26, a performance that earned him his first conference weekly honor.
The Mavericks finish the first half of their season at St. Cloud State on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 9-10. The series finishes a stretch of six straight road games.
