BROOKINGS, S.D. -- The Omaha baseball team concluded its weekend series at South Dakota State Sunday afternoon, falling 9-4 at Erv Huether Field. The Mavericks are now 17-15 (8-4 Summit League) on the season, while the Jackrabbits improve to 10-20 (6-6 Summit League).

Ryan Froom (2-5) earned the win for SDSU, allowing two runs on six hits and six walks with five strikeouts in 6.0 innings. Sophomore right-hander Corey Binger (4-2) took the loss, surrendering six runs on six hits and a walk with three strikeouts over 5.0 innings. Greg Casper picked up his second save of the year, throwing the final 3.0 innings and allowing two runs on two hits and three walks with six strikeouts.

Sophomore Adam Caniglia led the Mavericks at the plate, finishing 3-for-5 with two doubles, a run scored and another driven in. Freshman Grant Suponchick was also 2-for-3 with two RBI and a walk.

UNO took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first after senior Alex Schultz led off with a walk and later scored on a sacrifice fly to center by senior Clayton Taylor. Schultz then tallied another run in the third, starting the inning with a single to left, stealing second and coming in on an RBI single to short by Caniglia, which extended the Mavericks' lead to 2-0.

South Dakota State then cut the lead in half in the fifth, as Matt Johnson's solo homer to right made it 2-1.

The Jackrabbits put together an offensive outburst in the sixth, posting six runs on five hits. Phil Velez led off with a double down the left field line, followed by a Nick Smith single to left, after which Velez scored on a wild pitch. Paul Jacobson then walked and Luke Ringhofer was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs, and Jesse Munsterman dropped an RBI single in left to plate Smith. Following a Maverick pitching change, Johnson's sacrifice fly to right drove in Jacobson, and Newt Johnson tripled to right to score Munsterman and Ringhofer for two more runs. After another pitching change, Cody Sharrow singled up the middle to drive in Johnson, which pushed SDSU ahead 7-2.

The Mavericks then came back for two runs in the seventh, courtesy of a two-run single to left by Suponchick, which scored Caniglia and sophomore Ryan Cate and cut the Jacks' lead to 7-4.

South Dakota State, though, added two more runs to their tally in the seventh. Ringhofer sent a two-run homer down the right field line for a 9-4 advantage, which held for the final two innings.

Omaha returns to action on Wednesday, April 13, traveling to Kansas for a non-conference matchup. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. in Lawrence, Kan., and the game will be broadcast live on ESPN3. Links to live stats, audio and video will be available on OMavs.com.
