Ahrens Wins Summit High Jump; Mavericks Fourth

VERMILLION, S.D. – Stephanie Ahrens qualified for the NCAA Preliminaries with a win in the high jump, leading the Omaha track & field team on the second day of the Summit League Championship.
The Mavericks are currently in fourth place with 20 points. Eight-time defending champion North Dakota State leads with 165.5 points, followed by host South Dakota at 96.5. South Dakota State is third at 44.5. The final day of the championship begins at 11 a.m. on Saturday at USD's Lillibridge Track Complex.
Ahrens jumped 5-07 in the high jump, the event in which she's had the top mark in the Summit for much of the season. It was several inches from her top height in the event this season (5-11 ¼), a mark that ranks 11th in the nation and sixth in the west region.
Taryn Derickson took third in the high jump with a leap of 5-05. Both she and Ahrens earned All-Summit honors for finishing in the top three.
In the long jump, Nicole Liske finished in fifth place with a leap of 18-05 ¾, a mark that would have been a personal best, but it wasn't wind legal. None of the marks in the event were during a blustery day of competition.
Liske was busy, also qualifying for Saturday's finals of the 100 meter dash after running a qualifying time of 12.11. It was another mark that missed being a personal best because it was wind aided.
In the 800 meters, both Alyssa Thavenet and Lauren Houston qualified for the finals. Thavenet ran a time of 2:15.63 while Houston clocked a time of 2:16.57.
On Thursday, Anna Edet set a personal best and posted UNO's seventh-best mark in the hammer throw with a toss of 146-03.
