Two Incoming Mavericks Taken In Draft

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Two freshman defensemen for the Omaha hockey team were taken in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft on Saturday.
Ryan Jones was taken by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the fourth round, 121st overall, making him the seventh-highest pick in UNO history. Dean Stewart was taken by the Arizona Coyotes in the seventh round, 188th overall.
Jones was second in defenseman scoring for Lincoln of the USHL in 2015-16 with three goals and 27 assists for 30 points in 60 games. He also had 112 penalty minutes. The native of Crown Point, Ind. had an assist and 16 penalty minutes in four playoff games for the Stars. In 120 career games with Lincoln, had seven goals and 36 assists for 43 points and 181 penalty minutes.
In 42 games for Portage in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League in 2015-16, Stewart had eight goals and 14 assists for 22 points as well as 28 penalty minutes. He added three goals and 10 assists for 13 points and had eight penalty minutes in 13 playoff games as the Terriers won the MJHL playoff championship. In 75 career games with Portage, the native of Portage la Prairie, Manitoba had nine goals and 19 assists for 28 points and 30 penalty minutes.
The Mavericks now have three incoming freshman drafted by NHL teams. Jones and Stewart join goaltender Kris Oldham who was drafted by the Tampa Bay Lighting in the sixth round, 153rd overall, in 2015.
