Shires Announces Staff Additions for 2016

OMAHA, Neb. -- Head volleyball coach Rose Shires has announced two staff additions for the 2016 season with Tyler Yanez as volunteer assistant coach and Joy Leick as the director of volleyball operations.
Yanez comes to UNO after spending 2015-16 as a student assistant with the men's and women's volleyball teams at his alma mater, Mount Olive. He assisted with coaching, supervision and organization within the Trojans' nationally-competitive programs, including skill development with student-athletes. Previously, Yanez gained coaching experience with the Santa Monica Beach Club (2012-13), the Burroughs High School varsity girls' program (2012) and at the Triangle Volleyball Clinic.
As a player, Yanez began his collegiate career with two seasons at Pierce Community College, earning first-team all-conference honors in 2013. He then transferred to Mount Olive, lettering two years and picking up second-team all-conference recognition and all-academic plaudits from Conference Carolinas in 2015. Yanez graduated with his bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Mount Olive in May 2016.
"Having Tyler join our program as a volunteer assistant brings another former volleyball player to our staff," Shires said. "He possesses a great ability for running drills and gives adds pertinent information into the scope of the game. As a player, Tyler was a standout setter at Mount Olive and was able to see the game much like a coach would, so he brings that perspective to our student-athletes to help them work through on-court situations."
Leick takes on a new role with Omaha in 2016, having previously served as the Mavericks' team manager from 2014-16, during which time she coordinated travel, correspondence and game and practice film duties. She has also served as a longtime member of the UNO Volleyball Camps coaching staff.
As a player at College of Saint Mary, Leick was a two-year letterwinner for the Flames from 2011-12. During her career, she earned NAIA all-conference distinction and was an Omaha World-Herald All-Nebraska Honorable Mention pick both seasons. Leick also garnered first-team Academic All-District recognition from Capital One/CoSIDA as a sophomore. A native of Omaha, she graduated from UNO with her bachelor's degree in physical education and a concentration in exercise science in May 2016.
"Joy is a forward-thinking, energetic individual who will only enhance what our program is capable of achieving," Shires said. "She has moved from our student manager position to a full-time position as director of volleyball operations, and we're excited for the organization and energy she'll bring to our team on a daily basis in her new role."
