KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Omaha volleyball team closed its weekend at the UMKC Kangaroo Klassic Saturday morning, falling 3-1 (19-25, 23-25, 25-20, 16-25) to Cornell at Swinney Recreation Center. The Mavericks are now 2-9 on the season, while the Big Red improves to 3-3.

Junior Sydney O'Shaughnessy notched her team-leading fourth double-double of the season with a match-best 35 assists and 14 digs alongside three kills and two blocks.

Redshirt freshman Meagen Roth put up a match-high 13 kills with eight digs, and freshman Hannah Angeli added 11 kills, eight digs and a team-best four blocks. Defensively, freshman Ashley Smith led the way with 16 digs.

Cornell's Maddy Sroufe finished with a double-double on 13 kills and 14 digs. The Big Red hit .268 to Omaha's .173 and held a 12.0-6.0 advantage on the block.

Omaha found itself in an early 8-3 hole in the opening set before a 6-1 run capped by a Smith ace tied it at 9-9. The score tied three more times before Cornell rattled off six straight scores to lead 18-12. After trading the next six points, a pair of kills by Roth brought it to 21-17, but the Big Red finished it off for a 25-19 decision.

The Mavericks went up 7-5 in the second game, but a 4-0 run gave Cornell the lead at 9-7 and forced a Maverick timeout. UNO eventually climbed back with a 9-4 spurt, courtesy of two kills from senior Elise Brown and a block by Angeli and freshman Daria Taylor that put the game in an 18-18 deadlock. The Big Red then rallied with four straight scores, followed by a late 5-1 Omaha run with two Taylor kills and another by Brown that tied it again at 23-23. Cornell got kills from Emily Wemhoff and Kit McCarty though, seizing a 25-23 win and a 2-0 match lead.

In game three, UNO got early kills from Angeli, Roth, O'Shaughnessy and Ellie Brown, building a 9-2 lead. Later, Cornell pulled within three at 12-9 after three straight kills and a Maverick attack error, prompting an Omaha timeout. Out of the break, the Mavericks forced two attack errors and added a block by Angeli to go up by six. Omaha never let Cornell within less than three for the remainder of the set, securing a 25-20 win to send the match to a fourth game.

Cornell's offense, however, fired at a .478 attack percentage in the fourth set. After a 2-2 tie, the Big Red never relinquished the lead, and Omaha eventually faced a 20-9 deficit. Cornell took the last game 25-16 to claim the match at 3-1.
