The Omaha volleyball team begins Summit League play this weekend at Baxter Arena, welcoming Fort Wayne on Friday, Sept. 23 at 7 p.m. and Denver on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 5 p.m. Justin Doering, Brandon McDermott and Noah Sullinger will have the call of the action in both matches, and links to live stats, audio and video, as available, will be listed on OMavs.com.

Fort Wayne enters the weekend with a record of 4-9 (0-0 Summit League) after last Saturday's 3-2 loss at Stony Brook. The Mastodons lead the Summit League in total kills (660) and total assists (613). Sophomore outside hitter Nicole Rightnowar, the 2015 Summit League Freshman of the Year, paces Fort Wayne with 3.04 kills per set, while Olivia Hahn, last season's league digs leader, ranks third in the conference with 222 digs this year.
Head coach Steve Florio is in his third season with the Mastodons and owns a career record of 24-54.
Fort Wayne leads the all-time series with Omaha, 8-1. The two teams last met on Nov. 13, 2015, with the Mavericks winning 3-1 at Fort Wayne.
Scouting the Denver Pioneers
Denver, which carries a four-match win streak, enters the weekend with a record of 8-4 (0-0 Summit League) after sweeping Georgetown 3-0 last Saturday. Ruth Okoye leads the Summit League in hitting percentage (.398) and blocks per set (1.34), and she is one of three Pioneers among the league's top five blockers, joining Emma Willis (1.15 b/s) and Kayla Principato (1.02 b/s). Principato also paces Denver with 2.71 kills per set. As a team, the Pioneers are the conference's top team in hitting percentage (.269), blocks per set (2.67) and block assists (185).
Head coach Tom Hogan enters his first season as the head coach of the Pioneer program after serving as an assistant coach for the past four seasons.

Last Time Out: Mavericks' Block Party Leads to Split in St. Louis
Omaha closed the non-conference portion of its schedule last Saturday at the Billiken Invitational, falling 3-0 to host Saint Louis before defeating Murray State 3-2 at Chaifetz Pavilion.
In the first match of the afternoon vs. SLU, sophomore outside hitter Kayla Torson tallied a team-best nine kills against Saint Louis, adding eight digs and three blocks.
Junior setter Sydney O'Shaughnessy finished with 28 assists and another three blocks, and junior middle blocker Amanda Conlin posted four blocks with five kills. Defensively, freshman libero Ashley Smith led the way with 10 digs.
In the second match of the day vs. Murray State, Torson shined with a career-high 22 kills with 13 digs and three blocks for her team-leading fifth double-double of the year. O'Shaughnessy also nabbed her fifth double-double with 43 assists, 11 digs, a career-high-tying six blocks and three service aces.
Conlin was dominant at the net, putting up a career-high 10 blocks alongside seven kills. Freshman middle hitter Daria Taylor joined her with season highs of seven blocks and five kills, and senior outside hitter Elise Brown had a career-best four blocks with nine kills of her own.
Conlin's effort helped Omaha outblock Murray State 17.0-3.0, which marked the Mavericks' highest blocking total since 19.0 vs. UT Pan American on Sept. 20, 2014.
Smith also notched a season-high 34 digs, while freshman setter Hannah Angeli had 14, and freshman defensive specialist Olivia Spanton had another 10.

Junior setter Sydney O'Shaughnessy was named to the Billiken Invitational All-Tournament last weekend after averaging 8.73 assists, 1.18 digs, 0.82 blocks and 0.45 service aces per set over three matches.
O'Shaughnessy was previously named to the all-tournament teams at the UND Classic (Aug. 26-27) and the UMKC Kangaroo Klassic (Sept. 9-10).
Junior outside hitter Mackenzie Horkey was also named to the Omaha Classic All-Tournament Team on Sept. 3. Over two matches played, she averaged a team-leading 4.71 kills with 2.86 digs per set and finished with a career-high 27 kills on .453 hitting with 14 digs and two blocks vs. Ball State.

Over two matches vs. Saint Louis and Murray State last Saturday, Omaha outblocked its opponents a combined 24.0-6.0. The Mavericks had 17.0 of those in the finale with MSU, which marked their highest blocking total since 19.0 vs. UT Pan American on Sept. 20, 2014.

O'Shaughnessy Races Into Top 10 Assists List
Junior setter Sydney O'Shaughnessy etched her name into the UNO record books near the end of the 2015 season. Fourteen matches into her junior year, she ranks eighth in school history for career assists, having amassed 2,645 since joining the program in 2014. The Omaha native most recently passed Darla Melcher (1986-87), who had 2,628, and currently sits behind Christie Johnson (2002-05), who totaled 3,019.
O'Shaughnessy averaged 10.25 assists per set last season, becoming the first Maverick to average over 10.0 per set since Emily Myers in 2009.
Double-Double Tracker
The Mavericks owned a combined 47 double-doubles last season, led by 24 from setter Sydney O'Shaughnessy. She was the first Maverick in 13 years to register 20 or more double-doubles in a single season, as the last to achieve the feat was Amy McLeay, who had 20 in 2003.

Sophomore outside hitter Kayla Torson stepped into a starting role at the UND Classic and has started all 14 matches this season. The Cedar Rapids, Iowa, native has led the Mavericks in kills in eight matches and owns a team-high five double-doubles, including her latest effort with a career-high 22 kills and 13 digs vs. Murray State on Sept. 17.
Roth at the Ready
Redshirt freshman rightside hitter Meagen Roth is ready to see the court this season after redshirting in 2015. A product of Lincoln Southeast, she was previously a three-year letterwinner and a two-time All-Nebraska selection for the Knights. Roth also helped her team to three consecutive state tournament appearances and three straight district championships.
In her debut season, Roth is third on the team with 1.79 kills per set and has added 1.45 digs per set as well. During the Omaha Classic (Sept. 2-3), she tallied two double-doubles, including her first with career highs of 15 kills and 19 digs vs. Ball State.
Taylor's Starting Shot
Freshman middle hitter Daria Taylor earned her first career start last Saturday at Saint Louis, then started again that afternoon vs. Murray State. The Rock Island, Ill., wasted no time in making her mark, registering career highs of seven blocks and five kills against the Racers. Omaha went 12-4 in Summit League play in 2015, tying for second in the regular-season league standings. It marked the Mavericks' highest number of wins in conference play since going 12-8 in MIAA action in 2008.
2016 Slate Takes Mavericks Around the Nation
Omaha's 2016 schedule includes 30 matches against 22 different opponents, and the team will play in eight states across the country. UNO will square off with opponents from 12 other conferences, with three from the Missouri Valley and one apiece from the Atlantic 10, Big 12, Big Sky, Big Ten, Big West, Ivy League, MAC, Ohio Valley, SEC, Southland and WAC. Four opponents -- Denver, Illinois, Iowa State and Northern Iowa -- played in the 2015 NCAA Tournament.
Entering 2016, the Mavericks have never faced four of their opponents: Ole Miss, Ball State, Cornell and Murray State. UNO holds a combined all-time record of 221-159-2 over all teams on the slate this season.
Super Seven
The Mavericks have welcomed seven true freshmen to the roster this season, the most since 2011: defensive specialists Ashley Smith (Iowa City, Iowa) and Olivia Spanton (Savage, Minn.), setter Hannah Angeli (Maplewood, Minn.), outside hitter Chloe Dousette (St. Paul, Minn.), middle hitter Daria Taylor (Rock Island, Ill.), middle blocker Ellie Brown (Holdrege, Neb.) and rightside hitter Macy Anderson (Cedar Rapids, Iowa).
Smith was a four-time all-conference selection at Iowa City High School, while Taylor was a two-time all-conference pick at Rock Island High School. Anderson picked up all-conference honors twice at Kennedy High School, and Brown was a two-time all-conference selection and an all-state honorable mention awardee at Holdrege High School.
The Mavericks' three newcomers from Minnesota -- Angeli, Dousette and Spanton -- come with sterling resumes as well, highlighted by their Northern Lights club program traveling to Italy to play in an international tournament earlier in 2016. In addition, Angeli was a two-time first-team all-state pick and a four-time all-conference honoree at Hill-Murray School, while Dousette won three all-conference and two all-section awards at Cretin-Derham Hall, and Spanton earned two all-conference nods at Prior Lake High School.
Through the first month of play, five true freshmen have seen the court: Brown, Smith, Spanton, Angeli and Taylor.
Shires Guides Mavericks as Winningest Coach in School History
Head coach Rose Shires is the all-time winningest coach in 46 years of UNO volleyball history. In her 27th year at the helm of the Maverick program, Shires owns a career record of 478-354 (.575), with the most wins of the five coaches who have served at Omaha.
The 1996 AVCA National Coach of the Year and a two-time conference coach of the year, Shires has enjoyed tremendous success as UNO's guide. The 1996 campaign saw her lead UNO to a national championship as well as its first North Central Conference championship since 1987, followed by an Elite Eight appearance in 1997. In NCAA Tournament play, Shires' squads have combined for 11 appearances and a 10-10 postseason mark.
Shires is assisted by associate head coach Karen Povondra, who is in her 26th season, assistant coach Elena Pietro, in her second year, and volunteer assistant coach Tyler Yanez, who is in his first year on the Maverick staff.
Home Sweet Home Advantage
The 2016 season will see Omaha play 13 home contests, including eight conference tilts. UNO will play at two venues, with nine matches at Baxter Arena and four matches at Sapp Fieldhouse.
UNO has increased its number of home wins in each of the last four seasons, going from one in 2012 to two in 2013, five in 2014 and seven in 2015.

Shires is assisted by associate head coach Karen Povondra, who is in her 26th season, assistant coach Elena Pietro, in her second year, and volunteer assistant coach Tyler Yanez, who is in his first year on the Maverick staff.
Home Sweet Home Advantage
The 2016 season will see Omaha play 13 home contests, including eight conference tilts. UNO will play at two venues, with nine matches at Baxter Arena and four matches at Sapp Fieldhouse.
UNO has increased its number of home wins in each of the last four seasons, going from one in 2012 to two in 2013, five in 2014 and seven in 2015.
