Ortega Named To Preseason NCHC Team

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Senior forward Austin Ortega is one of six players named to the National Collegiate Hockey Conference Preseason All-Conference Team.
The team, released on Tuesday, is selected by a conference-wide vote of local and national media.
Ortega was fourth in the NCHC last year with a career-high 21 goals, and he finished the season with 36 points. The native of Escondido, Calif. put up an NCAA-best eight game-winning goals and is now three from tying the NCAA record. He is the NCHC's active career scoring leader with 92 points.
North Dakota sophomore forward Brock Boeser who was the poll's only unanimous selection. He was the NCHC Rookie of the Year last season, racking up 60 points while helping the Fighting Hawks to a national championship. Denver's Dylan Gambrell was the other forward named to the team. A member of the All-Rookie Team with Boeser, he finished fourth in NCHC scoring with 47 points.
Denver's Will Butcher and Miami's Louie Belpedio were preseason all-conference defensemen. Butcher was First Team All-NCHC last season while earning 32 points. Belpedio was honorable mention all-conference last season while picking up 17 points.
North Dakota's Cam Johnson was named preseason all-conference in goal. Last year, he was 24-4-2 with a 1.66 goals-against average and a .935 save percentage. He led the NCHC with five shutouts.
The 2016 NCHC Preseason Media Poll will be released on Wednesday on the NCHC's Twitter account (@TheNCHC). The poll will countdown from eight to one beginning at 2 p.m. CT.
The Mavericks open their season with an exhibition game against Alberta on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 7:07 p.m. at Baxter Arena.
