Koenig Leads Mavericks In Cross Country Opener

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Freshman Willa Koenig was the Omaha cross country team's top finisher as the Mavericks opened the season at the Augustana Twilight on Friday night.
The Mavericks finished fourth in the university division, running with Nebraska, Kansas State and South Dakota of the Summit League. UNO totaled 105 points over the three-mile course at Yankton Trails Park. USD won the event with 23 points, followed by K-State with 42 and the Huskers with 65.
Koenig clocked a time of 17:21.78 to finish 17th overall and with an adjusted finish of 16 points. Kayla Sabotin was second for the Mavericks and 20th overall, scoring 18 points, with a time of 17:31.18. Freshman Renata Valquier-Chavez was third on the team and 23rd overall (20 points) in a time of 17:40.43. UNO's top three times all were faster than the time of its top finisher in the same meet last season.
“Coach (Cliff) Cisar and I are extremely pleased with how we ran,” said UNO head coach Chris Richardson. “We had two freshmen, Koenig and Valquier-Chavez, step up big time in their first collegiate races, and this was Kayla's first race in nearly two years.”
Alyssa Averhoff was fourth for UNO, running a time of 18:18.06 that put her 35th overall and with 25 points. Freshman Anita Jenkins was fifth for UNO and right behind Averhoff in 36th (26 points) with a time of 18:18.44.
In all, 11 Mavericks competed in the field of 53 university runners.
Omaha returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 17, at the Woody Greeno Nebraska Invitational in Lincoln.
