The Omaha volleyball team returns to the road this weekend, playing three matches at the UMKC Kangaroo Klassic, Sept. 9-10, at Swinney Recreation Center in Kansas City, Mo. On Friday, the Mavericks face Bradley at 10 a.m. and Northern Iowa at 3 p.m., followed by a Saturday match with Cornell at 11 a.m. Links to live stats will be listed on OMavs.com.

Bradley enters the weekend with a record of 3-4 (0-0 MVC) after picking up a 3-0 win at South Dakota State on Sunday. Erica Haslag leads the Braves with 3.46 kills per set, while Kelsey Cave averages 1.08 blocks per set. Cave's .388 attack percentage also ranks second in the MVC.
Head coach Carol Price-Torok is in her first season at BU and owns a career record of 3-4.

Scouting the Northern Iowa Panthers
Northern Iowa enters the weekend with a record of 3-3 (0-0 MVC) after finishing a 1-2 trip at the USC Radisson Classic with a 3-0 sweep of Kentucky on Saturday. Leading hitter Kayla Haneline has 3.53 kills per set this season and a .358 attack percentage, while Piper Thomas averages 1.32 blocks per set, and Heather Hook's 10.84 assists per set lead the MVC. As a team, UNI also paces its conference peers with 13.95 kills and 2.79 blocks per set.
Head coach Bobbi Petersen is in her 17th season with the Panthers and carries a career record of 413-125.
Omaha leads the all-time series with Northern Iowa, 4-2. The two programs last squared off on Sept. 23, 1983 in St. Cloud, Minn., with the Mavericks winning 2-0.
Scouting the Cornell Big Red
Cornell enters the weekend with a record of 2-1 (0-0 Ivy League) after a 2-1 opening weekend capped with a 3-1 victory over Marist. Carla Sganderlla paces the Big Red with 3.00 kills per set alongside 3.45 digs per set, and Macey Wilson owns a team-best 1.27 blocks per set. Cornell is the Ivy League's top blocking team with 2.27 blocks per set and also ranks first with 18.64 digs per set.
Head coach Trudy Vande Berg is in her second year at Cornell with a career record of 9-19.
Saturday marks the first meeting all-time between Omaha and Cornell.
Last Time Out: Mavericks Drop Pair to Drake, UMKC at Omaha Classic
Omaha capped a packed weekend at the Omaha Classic Saturday at Baxter Arena, falling 3-1 to Drake and 3-0 to UMKC.
Senior outside hitter Elise Brown notched a career-high 14 kills to lead her squad vs. Drake and added two blocks and three digs, while sophomore outside hitter Kayla Torson was close behind with 13 kills and 20 digs for her team-best third double-double of the season.
Junior middle blocker Amanda Conlin had a standout effort with career highs of 11 kills and nine blocks and hit at a .550 clip for the afternoon. Freshman setter Hannah Angeli, making the first start of her young career, added a double-double on a season highs of 34 assists and 21 digs with four kills, three aces and two blocks.
As a team, Omaha achieved its best blocking effort of the year with 13.0 blocks to Drake's 10.0.
In the tournament finale that evening vs. UMKC, the Mavericks were led by 12 kills from Torson, who also added six digs. Junior setter Sydney O'Shaughnessy nabbed her second double-double of the season with 25 assists and 10 digs, and freshman libero Ashley Smith led the defensive effort with a team-high 13 digs.
Horkey Has Herself a Day
Junior outside hitter Mackenzie Horkey had the finest performance of her career last Friday vs. Ball State, totaling 27 kills on .453 hitting with 14 digs for her first double-double of the season. It marked the most kills in a match by any Maverick since Abby Sorensen's 26 vs. UC-Colorado Springs in 2011.
O'Shaughnessy, Horkey Garner All-Tournament Recognition
Junior outside hitter Mackenzie Horkey was named to the Omaha Classic All-Tournament Team last weekend. Over two matches played, she averaged a team-leading 4.71 kills with 2.86 digs per set and finished with a career-high 27 kills on .453 hitting with 14 digs and two blocks vs. Ball State.
Junior setter Sydney O'Shaughnessy was previously named to the UND Classic All-Tournament Team for her performance in the opening weekend of play. She averaged a team-high 7.50 assists per set, as well as 2.50 digs per set. O'Shaughnessy registered at least 20 assists in every match, including a season-high of 30 helpers vs. Ole Miss on Saturday.

Omaha ranks among the top 15 nationally in six categories: first for total attacks (1,209), third for total digs (544), eighth for attacks per set (40.3), 11th for digs per set (18.13), 13th for total kills (369) and 15th for total assists (345). Individually, freshman libero Ashley Smith is 14th for total digs (135), junior setter Sydney O'Shaughnessy is 37th for total assists (253), and sophomore outside hitter Kayla Torson is 32nd for total attacks (281).

As a team, Omaha is first in the Summit League in total kills (369), total attacks (1,209), total assists (345) and total digs (544), marking its second straight year as the league's leader for attacks and digs. Additionally, freshman libero Ashley Smith paces all league players in digs (135).
O'Shaughnessy Races Into Top 10 Assists List
Junior setter Sydney O'Shaughnessy etched her name into the UNO record books near the end of the 2015 season. Eight matches into her junior year, she ranks ninth in school history for career assists, having amassed 2,464 since joining the program in 2014. The Omaha native most recently passed Katie Agnew (2004-07), who had 2,359, and currently sits behind Darla Melcher (1986-87), who totaled 2,628.
O'Shaughnessy averaged 10.25 assists per set last season, becoming the first Maverick to average over 10.0 per set since Emily Myers in 2009.
Double-Double Tracker
The Mavericks owned a combined 47 double-doubles last season, led by 24 from setter Sydney O'Shaughnessy. She was the first Maverick in 13 years to register 20 or more double-doubles in a single season, as the last to achieve the feat was Amy McLeay, who had 20 in 2003.
Sophomore outside hitter Kayla Torson has a team-leading three double-doubles this season, followed by two apiece for O'Shaughnessy and redshirt freshman rightside hitter Meagen Roth and one each for freshman setter Hannah Angeli and junior outside hitter Mackenzie Horkey.
Torson Takes On Starting Role
Sophomore outside hitter Kayla Torson stepped into a starting role at the UND Classic and has started all eight matches this season. The Cedar Rapids, Iowa, native has led the Mavericks in kills in four matches and owns a team-high three double-doubles, including a career-best effort with 18 kills and 22 digs vs. Abilene Christian last Friday.
Torson is one of two Mavericks averaging at least 3.00 kills and 3.00 digs per set this season, joining junior outside hitter Mackenzie Horkey. The last time a Maverick averaged at least 3.00 kills and digs per set was Christina Reicks (3.60 k/s, 4.00 d/s) in 2006.
Roth at the Ready
Redshirt freshman rightside hitter Meagen Roth is ready to see the court this season after redshirting in 2015. A product of Lincoln Southeast, she was previously a three-year letterwinner and a two-time All-Nebraska selection for the Knights. Roth also helped her team to three consecutive state tournament appearances and three straight district championships.
After making her career debut last week, Roth is second on the team with 3.08 kills per set and has added 2.75 digs per set as well. Last week, she tallied two double-doubles during the Omaha Classic, including her first with career highs of 15 kills and 19 digs vs. Ball State.
Brown vs. the Bulldogs
Senior outside hitter Elise Brown tallied a career-best 14 kills vs. Drake last Saturday, leading the Mavericks in kills for a match for the second time this season. The Des Moines, Iowa, native also achieved career highs for digs (three) and blocks (two) against the Bulldogs.

Omaha's 2016 schedule includes 30 matches against 22 different opponents, and the team will play in eight states across the country. UNO will square off with opponents from 12 other conferences, with three from the Missouri Valley and one apiece from the Atlantic 10, Big 12, Big Sky, Big Ten, Big West, Ivy League, MAC, Ohio Valley, SEC, Southland and WAC. Four opponents -- Denver, Illinois, Iowa State and Northern Iowa -- played in the 2015 NCAA Tournament.
Entering 2016, the Mavericks have never faced four of their opponents: Ole Miss, Ball State, Cornell and Murray State. UNO holds a combined all-time record of 220-154-2 over all teams on the slate this season.
Super Seven
The Mavericks have welcomed seven true freshmen to the roster this season, the most since 2011: defensive specialists Ashley Smith (Iowa City, Iowa) and Olivia Spanton (Savage, Minn.), setter Hannah Angeli (Maplewood, Minn.), outside hitter Chloe Dousette (St. Paul, Minn.), middle hitter Daria Taylor (Rock Island, Ill.), middle blocker Ellie Brown (Holdrege, Neb.) and rightside hitter Macy Anderson (Cedar Rapids, Iowa).
Smith was a four-time all-conference selection at Iowa City High School, while Taylor was a two-time all-conference pick at Rock Island High School. Anderson picked up all-conference honors twice at Kennedy High School, and Brown was a two-time all-conference selection and an all-state honorable mention awardee at Holdrege High School.
The Mavericks' three newcomers from Minnesota -- Angeli, Dousette and Spanton -- come with sterling resumes as well, highlighted by their Northern Lights club program traveling to Italy to play in an international tournament earlier in 2016. In addition, Angeli was a two-time first-team all-state pick and a four-time all-conference honoree at Hill-Murray School, while Dousette won three all-conference and two all-section awards at Cretin-Derham Hall, and Spanton earned two all-conference nods at Prior Lake High School.
Through the first two weeks of play, five true freshmen have seen the court: Brown, Smith, Spanton, Angeli and Taylor.
Shires Guides Mavericks as Winningest Coach in School History
Head coach Rose Shires is the all-time winningest coach in 46 years of UNO volleyball history. In her 27th year at the helm of the Maverick program, Shires owns a career record of 477-349 (.577), with the most wins of the five coaches who have served at Omaha.
The 1996 AVCA National Coach of the Year and a two-time conference coach of the year, Shires has enjoyed tremendous success as UNO's guide. The 1996 campaign saw her lead UNO to a national championship as well as its first North Central Conference championship since 1987, followed by an Elite Eight appearance in 1997. In NCAA Tournament play, Shires' squads have combined for 11 appearances and a 10-10 postseason mark.
Shires is assisted by associate head coach Karen Povondra, who is in her 26th season, assistant coach Elena Pietro, in her second year, and volunteer assistant coach Tyler Yanez, who is in his first year on the Maverick staff.

Through the first two weeks of play, five true freshmen have seen the court: Brown, Smith, Spanton, Angeli and Taylor.
Shires Guides Mavericks as Winningest Coach in School History
Head coach Rose Shires is the all-time winningest coach in 46 years of UNO volleyball history. In her 27th year at the helm of the Maverick program, Shires owns a career record of 477-349 (.577), with the most wins of the five coaches who have served at Omaha.
The 1996 AVCA National Coach of the Year and a two-time conference coach of the year, Shires has enjoyed tremendous success as UNO's guide. The 1996 campaign saw her lead UNO to a national championship as well as its first North Central Conference championship since 1987, followed by an Elite Eight appearance in 1997. In NCAA Tournament play, Shires' squads have combined for 11 appearances and a 10-10 postseason mark.
Shires is assisted by associate head coach Karen Povondra, who is in her 26th season, assistant coach Elena Pietro, in her second year, and volunteer assistant coach Tyler Yanez, who is in his first year on the Maverick staff.
