Mavericks Finish Off Sweep of Tigers, 4-2

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Senior Justin Parizek had a pair of goals to lead the Omaha hockey team to a 4-2 win over Colorado College on Saturday night at Broadmoor World Arena.
The Mavericks earned their first series sweep in Colorado Springs to improve 13-8-3 overall and 6-6-0-0/0 in the NCHC, moving them into fourth place. The Tigers dropped to 6-14-2 overall and 2-8-2-0/0 in the conference, good for eighth.
With the game tied at 1, the Mavericks began the third period with a penalty kill but struck for the go-ahead goal when David Pope broke in down the right wing and zipped a shot over the glove hand of goalie Alex Leclerc at :18. It was UNO's NCAA-leading eighth shorthanded goal and second of the weekend.
Parizek made it 3-1 at 4:12, firing a pass from Colin Grannary just inside the right post. UNO goaltender Evan Weninger also earned an assist, his third of the year.
The Tigers converted on a power play to draw to within one. Alex Berardinelli got free in the slot and fired home his fourth goal of the year at 8:29.
But just 3:08 later, Parizek struck again, whipping home a pass from Tyler Vesel for a power play goal that made it 4-2.
Weninger stopped 30 shots to improve to 8-5-2 this season. Leclerc made 25 saves in the loss.
For the second straight night, the Tigers opened the scoring with an unassisted goal. Tanner Ockey made a steal at center ice, skated down the right wing and fired a shot from a sharp angle at 7:21.
The Mavericks tied the game late in the second period. Joel Messner busted in down the left wing and fired a shot that ricocheted back to Luc Snuggerud who was trailing the play. He one-timed the puck to the top corner for his career-best eight goal of the season.
It was Omaha's third series sweep of the season and its second on the road. The Mavericks improved to 9-1-2 away from Baxter Arena and finished the season with a record of 7-1-2 on Olympic-sized rinks (200 x 100).
The Mavericks return home to host Miami on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 20-21.
