VERMILLION, S.D. - The Omaha cross country team beat its preseason ranking, taking fourth at the Summit League Championships on Saturday. The Mavericks were picked to finish fifth in the coaches' poll back in August.
The team's finish was its highest since being eligible to compete in the event in 2012.
The squad also racked up numerous personal bests during the event.
Sophomore Willa Koenig led the way for the Mavericks, taking 18th place in a new personal best time of 22:12.91 for the 6k. Freshman Emily Johnson was close behind, also setting a new personal best in 22:28.00, good for 21st.
Senior Kayla Sabotin took 25th place in a new personal best time of 22:34.53 while fellow senior Alyssa Averhoff claimed 32nd in 23:09.81. Sophomore Renata Valquier Chavez concluded the scoring in 34th place, finishing the course in 23:14.83.
"I'm so proud of how we competed today," said assistant coach Cliff Cisar. "As a team, we took a chance and ran with guts. Each member had an integral role today and all of them played their parts."
"Willa raced extremely smart and gave us a chance to climb in the standings," Cisar added. "Emily and Kayla fed off that and made important moves to get us and keep us in fourth. Overall, I'm just thrilled by our performance today."
Sophomore Anita Jenkins also ran a new personal best in 23:16.73, as did junior Annie Catania in 23:46.77.
The Mavericks will have a two-week break before competing at the NCAA Midwest Regional Champoinships in Ames, Iowa on Friday, Nov. 10 at 2 p.m.
