Mavericks Compete at Kansas Classic, Mizzou Invite

TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Omaha swimming & diving team competed in different waters on Friday, as the swimmers took part in the opening day of the Kansas Classic, whilst the divers competed in the second day of the Mizzou Invite.
The swimmers were in Topeka, Kan., competing at the Capitol Federal Natatorium. Freshman Naleah Hadford got Omaha off to a hot start as she tied for first in the 50 freestyle with a finals time of 23.15. Her preliminary time of 23.14 was the fastest in the field and also set a new school record for the event.
Later on, Omaha finished seventh in the 200 free relay. The foursome of Hadford, junior Madi Ewald, junior Kristen Kracke and freshman Bella Smits finished with a time of 1:35.11.
In the 500 free, junior Kylie Vermeire finished 14th with a time of 5:03.87, while sophomore Rachel Morrow had a career-best time of 5:04.85, good enough for 17th overall.
In the 400 medley relay, the team of Smits, senior Tiril Jensen, senior Olivia McLain and Hadford finished with a time of 3:53, which placed Omaha 13th.
The divers were in Columbia, Mo., for day two of the Mizzou Invite at the Mizzou Aquatic Center. Senior Monica Houck finished 18th in the one-meter dive preliminaries (226.50), which was just 20 points away from qualifying for the finals. In the same event, Annika Clinton finished 23rd in preliminaries (212.45), but failed to qualify for the finals.
"I am very proud of our team today," head coach Todd Salmand said. "We had some great preliminary times and came back in the evening with some fantastic swims. It was an incredible evening for sprinters."
The Mavericks will continue both events tomorrow, as the Mizzou Invite will wraps up its final day. The second day of the Kansas Classic will begin tomorrow as well before it concludes on Sunday.
