Omaha Fifth After Second Day of Kansas Classic

TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Omaha swimming & diving team continued competition at the Kansas Classic on Saturday. The Mavericks remain in fifth place in the team standings with 190.5 points after two days of competition.
On the diving side, senior Monica Houck and junior Annika Clinton both placed in the top five of the three-meter dive. Houck took third with a score of 234.25, and Clinton finished fifth with a mark of 225.65.
Omaha's relay teams came through with strong performances, as seniors Tiril Jensen and Olivia McLain, junior Kirsten Kracke and freshman Naeleah Hadford took ninth (1:45.78) in the 200 medley relay for 22 points. Freshmen Bella Smits and Hailey Brull, sophomore Brook Landt and junior Madison Ewald finished 11th (1:46.87) for 14 more points.
In the 800 free relay – the final race of the day -- two more teams tallied points. Hadford, sophomore Rachel Morrow, junior Kylie Vermeire and senior Cassandra Jahn swam a 7:44.74 for 10th place to register 18 points, while Ewald, sophomore Anna Capoun, junior Kylene Abraham and senior Hilary Schieffer finished 12th (7:55.89) for another 12 points.
Individually, freshman Rebecca Martini won the B final of the 400 IM to place ninth overall (4:33.67) for nine points. Sophomore Lizzy Giese was fourth in the same race to place 12th overall (4:37.40) for five points, and junior Grete Baker followed in fifth in the event and 13th overall (4:38.28) for four points.
In the 100 fly, McLain took fifth in the B final for 13th overall (57.37) to tack on four more points, while Morrow added another four with a fifth-place showing in the B final of the 200 free for 13th overall (1:52.80).
Omaha garnered an additional four points with Jensen's fifth-place finish B final of the 100 breast, which placed her 13th overall (1:06.10), and Schieffer chipped in four more points in the B final of the 100 back for 13th overall (57.83) in that race.
Three Mavericks also won C finals in their respective events: Brull in the 100 fly (56.32), Kracke in the 100 back (57.30) and freshman Elena Page in the 100 breast (1:06.03).
"I'm very happy with how we performed today in our swims and with our dives," head coach Todd Samland said. "Day two was a success, and I'm looking forward to our final day tomorrow to see what we do with our performances."
