Senior Stephanie Ahrens will be a favorite to win the high jump at the Summit League Championship after taking the outdoor title for the second straight year last spring.

OMAHA, Neb. – Omaha track and field will begin its indoor track campaign on Saturday at the K-State Winter Invite in Manhattan, Kansas. The action is slated to start at noon.
The Mavericks will be led by two-time NCAA West Prelim qualifier and two-time Summit League Champion high jumper Stephanie Ahrens (Sr., Lincoln, NE). Ahrens was limited during last year's indoor season due to injury but bounced back for the outdoor season to capture her second Summit League high jump title and compete at the NCAA West Preliminary meet.
The distance squad is coming off a fast finish to its cross country season which concluded on Nov. 10 at the NCAA Midwest Regional Championship. Renata Valquier Chavez (So., Elkhorn, NE) just missed the program record in the 6k despite being plagued by an injury. Willa Koening (So., Lincoln, NE) turned in the fourth-fastest time in program history while freshman Emily Johnson (Elkhorn, NE) is now seventh all-time.
In the sprints, Daylee Olson (Sr., Arlington, S.D.) placed tenth at the Summit League Championships in 2017 in the 400m event and will look to improve her finish for the 2017-18 season.
In the throwing events, Anna Edet (Jr., Elkhorn, Neb.) returns as UNO's top performer in both the shot put (42-00 3/4) and the weight throw (53-05 3/4).
The Mavericks boast six freshman who accomplished much during their respective high school careers. Scarlett Hill (Bellevue, NE) competed in the state meet for the 100m and 200m and competed at the USATF National Junior Olympics three times. Hannah Hood (Creston, Iowa) specializes in the shot put and discus and was the Iowa State 3A Champion. She also holds the records for both events at her high school.
Alexis Riley (Omaha, NE) qualified for the state meet all four years at Marian High School and earned sixth in the triple jump as well as eighth in the 4x800 and 4x400 relays. Jaycee Schettler (Wellington, Kan.) was a two-time state qualifier in the sprint events.
Cassady Sunderman (Gretna, NE) finished fifth at the state meet for the high jump as a senior and qualified for the meet all four years of high school. Cecelia Yale (Council Bluffs, Iowa) specializes in the shot put and discus, and she finished sixth in discus and thirteenth in shot put at the state meet.
Following this week's meet, the Mavericks will have a month off before returning to the track at the Holiday Inn Invitational at Nebraska on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 12-13.
