Omaha Takes Two at Stanford Nike Invitational

STANFORD, Calif. ā The Omaha softball team claimed a pair of wins at the Nike Invitational on Saturday.Ā The Mavericks topped Stanford 3-2 in the opener and defeated Pacific 5-3 in the second game.Ā
The Mavericks are now 3-4 (0-0 Summit League) on the season.Ā Omaha's schedule for Sunday has been adjusted to just one game due to an incoming weather system.Ā UNO will play one game against UC Santa Barbara at 11 a.m. CT.
Omaha 3, Stanford 2
Junior Kelly Pattison led the Mavericks offensively in the first game of the day, finishing 1-for-3 with a homerun and three RBI.Ā Freshman Vicky Kinney went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored.
Sophomore right-hander Laura Roecker (2-2) earned the complete game win for UNO, allowing two runs on seven hits and six walks with five strikeouts.Ā Carolyn Lee (3-2) took the loss, surrendering three runs on five hits and two walks with six strikeouts over 7.0 innings of work.
Omaha scored all three of its runs in the top of the first inning.Ā Senior Nicole Warren drew a two-out walk and moved to second on Kinney's single through the left side.Ā Then Pattison drove a 1-1 pitch over the center field fence to give UNO the lead, 3-0.
Stanford got a run back in the bottom of the third.Ā Teaghan Cowles led off with a single up the middle, moved to third on Kylie Sorenson's double to left and scored on Bessie Noll's ground out.Ā
The Cardinal threatened in the fourth inning, loading the bases with two outs but they were unable to produce any runs.
The Mavericks were able to produce only one baserunner over the next three innings.Ā Stanford made it a one-run game in the bottom of the sixth.Ā Lauren Frost led off the inning with a double and moved to third on Arden Pettit's single.Ā The Cardinal scored on Cowles sac fly to right to cut Omaha's lead to 3-2 heading into the final inning.
Lee retired the Mavericks in order in the top of the seventh.Ā Stanford put runners on first and third with two-out in the bottom of the seventh, but Roecker was able to get a fly out to secure the win.
Omaha 5, Pacific 3
Pattison, Warren and senior Lia Mancuso each hit homeruns in game two to lead the Mavericks.Ā Pattison finished the day 3-for-3 at the plate with a double and a homer with two runs scored and a RBI.Ā Mancuso was a perfect 2-for-2 with a double and a homerun with two RBI and a run scored.Ā Warren had a homer with two RBI and a run scored.
Senior right-hander Abbie Clanton pitched a complete game to pick up her first win of the season.Ā Clanton allowed five hits, and four walked with two strikeouts.Ā Cassidy Gustafson (1-1) went the distance and took the loss, allowing five runs on eight hits and six walks with five punchouts.
Omaha took the lead in the bottom of the second as Pattison sent a 1-0 offering over the left field wall to give the Mavericks a 1-0 lead.
Pacific tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fifth inning.Ā Caitlyn Sung reached on a one-out single and scored on Starr Veng's double to right.Ā Omaha loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning on a Pattison single and two walks but could not manufacture any runs.
Senior Lizzie Noble opened the bottom of the sixth with a single to center and moved to second on freshman Emily Klosterman's sac bunt.Ā Warren cleared the bases with her second homerun of the season.Ā Pattison reached base for the third time with a two-out double to center.Ā Mancuso launched a 3-1 pitch over the right-center field wall to put Omaha in front, 5-1.
Gustafson opened the top of the seventh with a solo homerun to left.Ā The Tigers strung together two hits and a walk to make it a 5-3 game, but Clanton was able to end the threat with a ground out.
