LAS VEGAS -- The Omaha baseball team opened a two-game Sunday slate with an afternoon matchup with Saint Mary's at the UNLV Classic, falling 9-3 at Earl E. Wilson Stadium. The Mavericks are now 0-2 (0-0 Summit League) on the season, while the Gaels improve to 2-0 (WCC).

Junior Adam Caniglia finished 2-for-4 to lead the Mavericks at the plate. Sophomore Riley Herold went 1-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI, thanks to a two-run home run -- Omaha's first of the season.

Johnny York (1-0) earned the win for Saint Mary's, limiting the Mavericks to two runs on three hits and two walks with a pair of strikeouts in his start. The loss went to sophomore right-hander Grant Suponchick (0-1), who allowed five runs on eight hits and two walks in 4.0 innings of work.

The Gaels had 16 hits on the day, with three apiece from Preseason All-American Zach Kirtley (3-for-4, three RBI), Joey Fiske (3-for-5, two runs) and Brett Rasso (3-for-5, one run, one RBI).

Saint Mary's tallied first in the top of the second, as Rasso put a two-out single up the middle, stole second and scored on an RBI single through the right side by Charles Zaloumis for a 1-0 edge.

The Gaels extended their lead with a four-hit, four-run fifth inning. A leadoff four-pitch walk, a double and a single loaded the bases for Edward Haus, whose RBI single to center scored Zaloumis. Kirtley followed with a two-run double down the left field line to plate Conor Thane and Fiske. After junior Payton Kinney took over on the mound, a Jackson Thoreson sacrifice fly scored Haus to make it 5-0. Saint Mary's added another run in the sixth when Haus singled through the right side to drive in Zaloumis, pushing it to 6-0.

Omaha finally got on the board in the bottom half of the inning when Herold delivered a two-run shot to left, which trimmed the Gaels' lead to 6-2.

Omaha and Saint Mary's each tallied a run in the seventh. In the top of the frame, a Rasso single to left pushed in Joe Vranesh at 7-2. The Mavericks responded immediately in the bottom half of the inning, as sophomore Nate Mallott led off with a single to short and later scored on a sacrifice fly to right by senior Sam Palensky, which cut the score to 7-3.

In the eighth, Fiske put a two-out single through the left side, then scored two batters later when Kirtley sent a first-pitch RBI single through the left side to give the Gaels an 8-3 advantage. They crossed one last time in the ninth when Kevin Milam sent out a leadoff home run to left, bringing the final score to 9-3.

Omaha returns to action tonight at approximately 8:45 p.m. CT, facing UNLV at Earl E. Wilson Stadium. A link to live stats will be available on OMavs.com.
