LAS VEGAS -- Propelled by three home runs between juniors Ryan Cate and Adam Caniglia, the Omaha baseball team upended UNLV 8-2 in the UNLV Classic Sunday night at Earl E. Wilson Stadium. With the win, the Mavericks improve to 1-2 (0-0 Summit League) on the season, while the Rebels fall to 1-2 (0-0 Mountain West).
Four Mavericks had multi-hit performances for the night: Cate (2-for-4, two runs, four RBI), senior Sam Palensky (2-for-2, two runs, two RBI) and sophomores Grant Suponchick (2-for-5) and Nate Mallott (2-for-3, one run).
Junior right-hander Corey Binger (1-0) was strong on the mound in his first start of the year, picking up the win after 7.0 innings of work. The Victoria, Minn., native allowed one run on five hits with five strikeouts and no walks. Tevita Gerber (0-1) took the loss for UNLV, giving up eight runs -- six earned -- on nine hits while striking out six over 6.2 innings.
UNLV was led by a 2-for-4 night from Cooper Esmay. Max Smith finished 1-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI with a homer.
The Mavericks worked out to a two-run lead in the top of the third inning, striking first for the first time this weekend. With two outs and runners in scoring position, Palensky knocked in redshirt freshman Andrew Hall and freshman Cole Thibodeau with a single up the middle, pushing the Mavericks ahead 2-0.
In the bottom half of the inning, UNLV cut the lead in half with a solo home run to center by Smith, making it 2-1.
Omaha was held to one hit over the fourth and fifth innings. In the sixth, Palensky led off and was hit by a pitch, and Cate followed by crushing a 1-1 pitch over the left field wall to extend the Mavericks' lead to 4-1.
The momentum continued in the seventh, as Omaha strung together four hits for four runs. After a two-out single to right by Mallott, Caniglia came up big with a two-run shot to left that made it 6-1. Palensky followed with a single up the middle, and Cate promptly delivered another two-run shot to left for an 8-1 advantage.
Freshman left-hander Cam Fowler made his collegiate debut by relieving Binger in the eighth, and the Rebels mustered one run after Smith drew a leadoff walk and later scored via Payton Squier's two-out RBI single through the right side. Sasse then took the mound in the ninth to issue three strikeouts over five batters faced, and Omaha claimed the win, 8-2.
