MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Omaha men's tennis opened its Spring Break trip with a 7-2 victory over St. Thomas University. With the win, the Mavericks are 6-8 (0-0 Summit League), while the Bobcats fall to 5-8 (0-0 Sun Conference).
Omaha started hot winning the first two doubles matches of the day. Senior John Ellis and sophomore Matt Dunn made quick work of Brandon Vilez and Michele Coletta at No. 3, 8-3. Sophomore Alex Woodward and freshman Nathan Reekie followed with an 8-2 win at No. 2 over Jacobo Nieto and Mauricio Fernandez. The Bobcats struck back at No. 1 as Jermaine Le Grand and Dimitri Bird tripped up senior Colin Buckley and freshman Razvan Grigorescu, 8-6.
The Mavericks secured the match by winning five of six singles matches. Freshman Louis-Jonas Heizlsperger opened with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Nieto at No. 4. Woodward picked up a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Fernandez at No. 5. Grigorescu clinched the match for Omaha with a 7-5, 6-0 win over Fabrice Bissainthe at No. 1.
Ellis continued the winning ways after topping Vilez 6-2, 6-4 at No. 6. Dunn stopped Dimitri Bird in split sets at No. 3, 6-1, 4-6, 10-8. Reekie fell to Le Grand at No. 2, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5).
Omaha returns to action on Wednesday, March 22, visiting Florida Atlantic. First serve is set for 12:30 p.m. CT in Boca Raton, Fla.
