Omaha Caps Weekend With 6-3 Win at NDSU

FARGO, N.D. -- The Omaha baseball team secured a weekend series win with its 6-3 victory Sunday afternoon over North Dakota State at Newman Outdoor Field. With the win in the series finale, the Mavericks improve to 10-29 (7-11 Summit League), while the Bison drop to 19-20 (10-8).
Payton Kinney (2-1) earned the win in relief, throwing 5.0 shutout innings. Kinney held NDSU to one hit with no walks and five strikeouts. The loss went to Chris Choles (3-2), who gave up three runs on five hits and two walks with one strikeout over 2.1 innings.
Kinney and starter Cal Hehnke limited the Bison to just four hits for the day.
Sam Palensky led the Mavericks at the dish, going 2-for-4 with three runs scored and a walk. Cole Thibodeau (2-for-3, one run), Ryan Cate (2-for-5, one run), Marcus Ethen (2-for-5, one run) and Jack Kalina (2-for-4, one RBI) also had multi-hit efforts.
Omaha jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, as Palensky led off the game with a single to center and later scored when Grant Suponchick reached on a Bison error. The Mavericks extended it to 2-0 in the third when Palensky again led off the inning and worked a walk, advanced on another NDSU miscue and scored on Suponchick's RBI single up the middle.
NDSU cut the lead in half with a run in the third, then took the lead at 3-2 with two runs on a pair of hits in the fourth.
Omaha responded by putting the game in a 3-3 lock in the sixth. Ethen reached with a one-out bunt single, advanced on an Adam Caniglia sacrifice bunt and scored via Kalina's RBI single up the middle.
The Mavericks regained the lead in the seventh and never looked back. Palensky started the inning with a single to center, then moved to third with a Thibodeau sacrifice bunt and a Cate single to right, and he finally crossed when Suponchick reached on a fielder's choice to make it 4-3. Omaha added two insurance runs in the ninth with Nate Mallott's two-run single up the middle to score Cate and Thibodeau.
Omaha is back in action on Tuesday, April 25, meeting in-state foe Nebraska for the second time this season. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. at Hawks Field, and the game will be televised live on NET. Links to live stats, audio and video will be available on OMavs.com.
