Ortega, Snuggerud Named All-Americans

CHICAGO, Ill. – The American Hockey Coaches Association announced today that Omaha senior forward Austin Ortega and junior defenseman Luc Snuggerud have been named AHCA Second Team West All-Americans.
They are the sixth and seventh Mavericks to earn All-American honors. It is the first honor for each player.
Ortega finished the regular season and playoffs leading the NCHC in scoring for all games played with 20 goals and 27 assists for 47 points. His assist and point totals are career bests. A member of the NCHC All-Conference First Team, Ortega was the NCHC's Offensive Player of the Week three times this season. The native of Escondido, Calif. also was named the conference's Player of the Month in December for scoring five goals and five assists in six games. Earlier this season, he tied the NCAA record by scoring his 23rd career game-winning goal.
Ortega finished his UNO career ranked fourth with 139 career points and second with 70 goals. In addition to ranking first in game-winning goals, he's also fifth with 21 power play goals and 10th in assists (69).
Snuggerud ranked second in scoring among NCHC defensemen for all games played at the conclusion of the regular season with 11 goals and 20 assists for 31 points, all career highs. His goal total was best among NCHC defensemen. A fifth round draft pick of the Chicago Blackhawks in 2014, Snuggerud is tied for third among all NCHC players with 18 power play points. He was named the NCHC's Defenseman of the Week following a two goal-two assist performance against Western Michigan on Feb. 10-11. As a freshman, the native of Eden Prairie, Minn. was named to the NCHC All-Rookie Team.
Snuggerud, who left UNO following the season to sign with the Blackhawks, finished his career ranked fifth in scoring among all UNO defensemen with 65 points. His 17 career goals rank third all-time and his 48 career assists rank sixth.
Omaha's other All-Americans include Greg Zanon, D (2001 – Second Team, 2002 – Second Team); Jeff Hoggan, F (2002 – Second Team); Scott Parse, F (2006 – First Team, 2007 – Second Team); Ryan Walters, F (2013 – Second Team); and Josh Archibald, F (2014 – First Team).
