COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Omaha hockey team has been picked to finish seventh in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference this season. The conference released its annual media poll on Tuesday.
The Mavericks received 83 points in the voting of 30 media members from all eight NCHC cities and regional and national outlets that cover the conference. It is their lowest position in the poll since they were picked last prior to the inaugural season of the NCHC in 2013-14. That season, the Mavericks finished third.
Defending national champion Denver was the overwhelming favorite to repeat as NCHC champion, receiving all 30 first-place votes and 240 points overall. St. Cloud State was second with 187 points and North Dakota was third at 172. The complete poll is below and in the attached NCHC release.
The NCHC will hold its annual Media Day on Wednesday, Sept. 20 at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn., the new home of the NCHC Frozen Faceoff. Omaha head coach Mike Gabinet and senior captain Joel Messner will be meeting with the media in attendance. Look for more from Media Day on the NCHC's social media accounts and Mavericks' Twitter and Instagram feeds (both @OmahaHKY).
UNO opens its season on Friday, Oct. 6 when it hosts Nipissing University of North Bay, Ontario.
