Vesel, Messner Named NCHC Players of Week

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Omaha seniors Tyler Vesel and Joel Messner have been named NCHC Players of the Week, the conference announced on Monday.
Vesel was named the co-Offensive Player of the Week with Colorado College's Nick Halloran. Messner was named the Defenseman of the Week. It is the second career weekly award for both players.
Vesel led the Mavericks in scoring with five points in a weekend sweep of Western Michigan. On Friday, Vesel had two assists, including one on the game-winning goal, in a 6-2 win. He had four shots and was even for the game.
On Saturday, the native of Rochester, Minn. scored two goals, including UNO's first shorthanded goal of the season, and had an assist in a 7-3 win. In that game, he had four shots and finished +3 for the game. His assist on UNO's final goal of the game was his 100th career point, making him the 16th Maverick all-time to reach the century mark.
Messner tied for fourth in team scoring with three points against Western Michigan. On Friday, Messner scored the game-winning goal, in a 6-2 win. He also had three shots, a game-high six shot blocks and finished +1. The goal was his career-best fifth of the season.
The next night, the native of Lorette, Manitoba had two assists, four more shot blocks and was +1 to help the Mavericks earn their third straight home sweep. Messner has put up career numbers in his final season with five goals and 12 assists for 17 points, leading all UNO defensemen in scoring. He is currently ninth in NCHC defenseman scoring for all games played.
The No. 13 Mavericks are back on the road this weekend to face No. 6/4 St. Cloud State on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 2-3.
