Mavericks Snag Two Weekly Awards

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Seniors Mason Morelli and Evan Weninger have earned two of the NCHC's four weekly awards for their work against Arizona State last week.
Morelli was named the NCHC Offensive Player of the Week, and Weninger got the nod as the NCHC's Goaltender of the Week. Both earned their first weekly awards of the season and for Morelli, the first of his career.
Morelli had a career weekend, leading the Mavericks to a sweep of No. 16/14 Arizona State. On Friday, he potted a goal and had the primary assist on three others, including the game winner, in Omaha's 6-4 come-from-behind win. Morelli's goal started the offense for Omaha, coming on his only shot of the game. He finished the game with a +2 rating and one block. The native of Minot, N.D. posted a career high for points in a game.
The next night, Morelli had two goals, including the game winner, and assisted on another as the Mavericks finished off the sweep with a 4-0 win. He was again +2 in the game with another blocked shot.
Because of the big weekend, Morelli moved into a tie for the team scoring lead with seven goals and eight assists for 15 points. He leads the team in goals. He is now tied for second in NCHC scoring for all games played and is tied for fourth in goals.
Weninger backstopped both games against Arizona State last weekend. On Friday, he made 23 saves and allowed four goals in a 6-4 win over the Sun Devils. He helped the Mavericks kill off two five-minute majors as Omaha went 2-for-2 on the penalty kill.
The next night, the native of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan was at his best, making 44 saves in a 4-0 win over the Sun Devils. He was key to the Mavericks stopping all four ASU power plays and has helped the team kill off 19 straight opponent power plays. The shutout was the fifth of Weninger's career, moving him into third all-time at UNO.
Weninger finished the weekend with 67 saves and four goals against, good for a 2.00 goals-against average and a .944 save percentage.
The Mavericks have now earned three NCHC weekly awards this season. Taylor Ward was named NCHC Rookie of Week on Nov. 5.
Omaha returns to conference play this weekend, hosting Colorado College on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 30-Dec. 1. Both games begin at 7:07 p.m. from Baxter Arena.
