OMAHA, Neb. – Colorado College rode a four-goal first period to a 6-3 win over the Omaha hockey team on Saturday at Baxter Arena.

The Mavericks dipped to 4-8-2 overall and 2-3-1-0/1 in the NCHC while the Tigers improved to 6-6-2 overall and 2-5-1-0/0 in the conference.

The Tigers got goals by Ben Copeland, Christiano Vesich, Alex Berardinelli and Trevor Gooch in the first 20 minutes, outshooting the Mavericks 16-6 in the process.

The Mavericks finally got on the board during a power play at 2:50 of the second. Mason Morelli pivoted with the puck in the low slot and his shot deflected in off the stick of a Colorado College defender. It was his team-leading ninth goal of the season.

The Tigers answered quickly with Gooch's second goal of the game off a net-mouth scramble at 4:33, making it 5-1 after two.

The Mavericks drew to within three again at 4:35 of the third when Riley Alferd fired a shot to the top corner, beating goalie Alex Leclerc for this third goal in as many games.

The Tigers countered on a tip-in goal from Mason Bergh as 12:19 to make it 6-2.

Taylor Ward closed the scoring when he squeezed a shot between Leclerc and the post from below the goal line at 19:11.

Evan Weninger took the loss, making 12 saves and allowing four goals in the first period. Matej Tomek played two periods of relief, making 18 saves and allowing two. Leclerc stopped 21 shots in the win.

The Mavericks finish the first half of the season at St. Cloud State on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 7-8.

GAME NOTES:

Fredrik Olofsson extended his point-scoring streak to seven with an assist on Ward's goal. He has six goals and five assists during the streak.
Alferd matched his career best for goals in a season, a mark he set during his sophomore year.
Morelli now has goals in four straight games, a new team season high. He has registered points in six of the last seven.
The Mavericks went 1-for-2 on the power play and have now scored at least one power play goal in 13 of their first 14 games.
UNO held Colorado College without a goal in three power play chances, going 8-for-10 on the weekend.
