COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Senior Mason Morelli and freshman Taylor Ward have been named the NCHC Player of the Month and Rookie of the Month, respectively, for November.
They are the first month awards for either player.
Morelli led the NCHC in scoring during the month with five goals and seven assists for 12 points in seven games. After being held scoreless in the first game of the month, he put up a goal and an assist and a +2 rating in a 6-3 win over Miami. The following weekend, he had an assist in Omaha's series-opening 7-2 loss at Western Michigan, his only point of the weekend.
Against Arizona State the following weekend, he had a career-best four points (one goal, three assists-all primary) in a 6-4 win over the Sun Devils. The next night, he had two more goals and an assist in a 4-0 win over ASU. The seven-point weekend helped him earn his first career NCHC Offensive Player of the Week honor.
The native of Minot, N.D. finished the month with a goal and an assist in a 3-3 tie with Colorado College. He also had the deciding goal in the shootout.
Morelli finished the month in a three-way tie for the scoring lead in the NCHC with nine goals and nine assists for 18 points. He already has matched his career best for points in a season.
Ward led all NCHC rookies and tied for second among all players in scoring with three goals and seven assists for 10 points in seven games. Ward began the month with Omaha's only goal in a 4-1 loss to Miami. The following night, he had a goal, an assist and a +2 rating in a 6-3 victory over the RedHawks. For his efforts in that series, he earned his first career NCHC Rookie of the Week honor.
At Western Michigan the following weekend, he had a primary assist in Omaha's 7-2 loss in the series opener, his only point of the weekend.
The native of Kelowna, British Columbia had a goal and an assist in a 6-4 win over No. 16 Arizona State and came back the next night with another assist in a 4-0 win over the Sun Devils. He wrapped up the month with three assist, two primary, in a 3-3 tie with Colorado College.
Ward ranks third in scoring among NCHC rookies with five goals and eight assists for 13 points. He is currently tied for third in team scoring and is first among Omaha rookies.
The Mavericks finish the first half of the season at No. 2/1 St. Cloud State on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 7-8.
