Mavericks Open Indoor Season This Weekend
Dec 5, 2018 | Track & Field
OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha track & field team begins its indoor season at the Mel Tjeerdsma Classic hosted by Northwest Missouri State on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 7-8. Competition begins at 1 p.m. on Friday and 11 a.m. on Saturday.
The Mavericks, who were picked to finish in a tie for sixth in the preseason coaches' poll, finished fifth in last year's Summit League Indoor Championships.
Senior Stephanie Ahrens is the defending Summit indoor high jump champion after jumping 5-08 ½ last year at Fargo, N.D. and earning All-Summit League honors. She also finished seventh in the 60 meter hurdles. Â
Ahrens, who redshirted the indoor season as a junior, will be competing in her final season for Omaha. She is the three-time Summit outdoor high jump champion and four-time NCAA qualifier in the event.
Senior Lauren Houston is another All-Summit performer, having finished second in the 800 meters during last year's championships. She ran a season-best time of 2:11.35 which was the fifth-fastest 800 meter time in school history.
Senior Anna Edet is another threat to score for the Mavericks in the weight throw. Last season, she surprised the league by finishing eighth with a massive personal best throw of 58-06 ½, more than two feet beyond her previous best.
This season, the Mavericks welcome eight newcomers including seven freshmen. Two of the newcomers, freshman Heidi Hall and junior Ivanna Uribe, both competed for the Omaha cross country team this fall.
Following the meet at Northwest Missouri State, the Mavericks won't compete again until Jan. 11-12 at the Graduate Classic hosted by Nebraska.
